Rising dubstep artist SubDocta has released his debut EP “West Coast Wobble”, out now on SubCarbon Records. The EP is four tracks of hard-hitting, nonsensical madness that puts a satirical spin on the abrasively familiar old school dubstep sound.
“West Coast Wobble” is named after SubDocta’s self-described distinctive sound, which takes dubstep’s minimalist tones of old, and adds a modern West Coast edge. It’s a style only matched by a few artists such as Dirt Monkey, a collaborator on this EP along with Esseks, and notably Ganja White Night, whose influence in SubDocta’s style is unmistakable. After taking inspiration from them for years, this exciting release marks his first album released on their iconic label.

The EP kicks off with Booty Wobble, a cartoonish, yet whimsical reggae dub track. Layers of deep abrasive wubs, resonate into comic samples beneath a beautiful yet peculiar melody. It’s all beautiful, dark, and silly, with sonic humor used to enliven the bizarre and wondrous narrative.
Smooth Custard takes the same old dub foundation and gives it a modern twist. The bass is scraped on thick, before dropping into a slappy, upbeat melody. This track has an unforgettable refrain that’s transmogrified to its heavier second coming. The whole thing is a weird, engaging journey that’s well worth the adventure.
The EP’s title track West Coast Wobble is a collaboration with Dirt Monkey, another pioneering force in the wobbly realm of all that is dank and ridiculous. The playfulness of this genre is one of its distinguishing qualities. This track is like wandering through a funhouse, opening different doors and seeing different wacky scenes bouncing through the crooked hallways. The distinctive styles of each artist are discernible, yet blend so perfectly together into one deep, heavy track.
Sandy Daniel is the second collab on the EP, this time with Esseks, a legend in the domain of dark dub. This sinister mix of styles creates a new sort of psychedelic wobble. It’s heavily layered with haunting vocals, sweeping wubs, and enchanting melodic instrumentals that juxtapose dark with light. There’s so much action and rhythm loaded into one explosive track, there’s not much one can do but dance it out.
Each track of “West Coast Wobble” is a standalone banger that we’ll no doubt be hearing in many sets to come. And it’s one that will hit so much harder with the sub-bass in action.
SubDocta is on tour with Dirt Monkey and Riot Ten this fall. Be sure to check him out, and stay tuned for more of his absurd and heavy stylings!
