News has surfaced that one of the companies behind Coachella (AEG live) has set their sights on Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, NY for an east coast version of the festival. This iconic location in New York was the home of the 1964 World’s Fair, featured in a variety of featured films, and might now be the host of AEG’s latest Coachella gone-east-coast festival tentatively titled Panorama.
The festival is rumored to take place 2 weeks before Governors Ball, the most successful repeat festival in New York since its conception in 2011. The promoters of Governors Ball, who run independently and wish to remain so, obviously aren’t thrilled with the competition that AEG Live would bring to the table – especially with their festivals being only two weeks apart.
“The timing of this corporate-run festival would threaten our ability as a small business to continue putting on the kind of event that has showcased the best artists, created hundreds of local jobs and put millions of dollars back into the city’s economy,” said Tom Russell, of Founders Entertainment, which puts on Governors Ball.
AEG has apparently already started booking talent for this event, although the specific details around this fest happening are not yet set in stone. It’s apparent that nothing can really compare to the beautiful polo field, palm trees, and undeniable paradise that Coachella’s Indigo, CA setting brings to the table; but if there’s one thing we can all agree on its that AEG Live brings top tier production to the table when throwing any major festival.
It’ll be interesting to see how this event actually plays out, and we’ll keep you updated as this story develops.
