Internationally renowned electronic music producer CloZee has released her newest full-length album Evasion, out now on Gravitas Recordings and Midnight Escape Records. The ten track album is a beautifully produced reinterpretation of sounds encountered on her travels, fused with her rhythmic style, that seeks to express her yearning for to traverse the globe.
The French artist’s distinctive brand of enchanting world bass has entangled listeners in her works, and gained her an increasingly large following around the globe, primarily in the transformational festival scene. She creates an immersive cinematic atmosphere using international sounds layered with exotic instrumentals.
CloZee has expressed her excitement about this album saying,
“I’m beyond happy for everyone to finally be able to listen to this album, and to travel to their own secret places. EVASION is the result of my years of research and adventures while touring, traveling, meeting new people, and discovering new landscapes.”
Though Evasion has been framed as a representation of world music, it’s relatively one-dimensional compared to her previous releases. Rather, it’s more of a downtempo ambient reworking of primarily East Asian influence. The production is very high quality but doesn’t represent much outside of the Far East, besides the over-simplified expression of what Middle Eastern music might sound like to someone who’s never heard it.
Though this album doesn’t particularly stand out against her other works, certain tracks like “The Golden Mask” and “Chinese Trip” are particularly enchanting. The East Asian sound is prevalent through her tireless use of pentatonic scales, and emphasis on traditional Chinese instruments like the fluttering dizi, wailing erhu, and sinuous guqin intersecting through repetitive layers.
“Wander On” perhaps most poignantly articulates one’s heartfelt desire for travel. It’s a melancholic ballad carried by the haunting vocals of Cristina Soto wailing beside a sorrowful Spanish guitar, together with a yearning for worlds beyond your own.
CloZee’s tenderly seductive tracks are known for sparking a sense of wanderlust, in search of the secrets only discovered through movement. Framing this album as one of global influence is unfair to her numerous other works, which indeed feel more globally inspired. Regardless, CloZee has a sense for alluring rhythms and catchy basslines, which give her tracks their enticing foundation. Evasion maintains those distinctly CloZee qualities, whilst also preserving the solemn intrigue which keeps devoted listeners drawn to her music.
