Last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, A Tribe Called Quest reunited for their first TV appearance in over 15 years to perform “Can I Kick It” from the 25th Anniversary Edition of their debut album, “People’s Instinctive Travels and The Paths of Rhythm”. You can watch the video below.
Comprised of members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi, the group released five albums over the course of the 1990’s. Originally parting ways after 1998’s The Love Movement, only to later reunite in 2006. However, while opening for Kanye West in 2013, they performed what they said were to be their final shows once again.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Phife Dawg stated that he disagreed with the decision to stop performing, which was made by Q-Tip. “I think it is ludicrous that we are not performing together,” he said. He added “Tribe is no longer a group, first off. So once Q-Tip made the announcement that those were the last two shows, that was pretty much it, for real.” He added: “I can’t really talk about it, to be honest. Because when I talk, my mouth gets me in trouble. I’m the type of dude that tries to keep it 100 and I always get in trouble for it. But I will say: it’s dumb, and I don’t agree with it and we’re doing the fans a great injustice by not getting together and rocking, and that’s all I can really speak on as far as that goes.”
Will we ever see more from the group? Only time will tell
