Rezz Bewitched Seattle’s WaMu Theater on Her Certain Kind of Magic Tour

This weekend Rezz took over Seattle’s WaMu Theater in what she proclaimed to be her biggest headlining show to date.

A sold out room of 9,000 people were mesmerized by the otherworldly ambiance set with the expert help of Canada’s best in sound, lighting and visuals. It was a theatrical scene of otherworldly imagery and vivid lighting supported by Beama Visual Environments, and deep booming sonance from PK Sound.

Rezz was preceded by mysterious new act 1788-L, who set the stage with a gritty performance that cohered perfectly with this show’s dark mystique. Each thumping track burst through the speakers with merciless force, infused with glitchy sound effects and sci-fi interludes creating a sinister cyberpunk ambience. The set was hypnotic to say the least. 1788-L was followed by Night Bass champion AC Slater whose filthy bass house recalibrated the room with bouncier beats and old school vibes. He kept the tone deep and dark, and got our blood pumping before turning it over to the headliner herself.

Rezz came in hot with deep rumbling bass and a forceful energy that set the tone to extraterrestrial right out of the gates. She worked her mind-bending magic beneath intensely psychedelic, beautifully produced visuals which were just as mesmerizing as her music. The black, white and red color scheme created a sort of eerie wormhole which gave the weird, animated movements of the lights a life of their own.

The crowd exploded with excitement at each transition into classic favorites, heavy-hitters from Certain Kind of Magic, and sinister remixes, all of which were cohesive with her distinctively dark and heavy stylings. This was her first dedicated show with support from PK Sound, and she legitimately could not have sounded better. The sound system gave her already immersive music sinuous limbs that took hold of our helpless souls. The whole performance was a unique sensory experience that was literally out of this world.

After a blowout encore with Skrillex’s “Reptile’s Theme”, she graciously expressed her thanks as well as her awe at the expansive and mutually appreciative crowd. She added that it might be ambitious, but she would like to play at the Gorge, which expectedly received exalting support.

Rezz has amassed a huge devoted following in recent years, and for good reason. It’s mind blowing to see how far she has come, and this show really demonstrated that growth since her last stop in Seattle. As her live shows expand, and productions keep coming, it would do best to keep an eye on Rezz as it appears great things are to come. Who knows, perhaps we’ll soon be seeing her at the Gorge.
