With June officially here, that means a couple of things, the start of Summer looms around the corner but even more importantly, it is officially Electric Forest month. From June 19 – June 22, thousands of loving festival-goers will be flocking to Rothbury, Michigan in a yearly pilgrimage. To some, it’s a camping trip with friends, to others it’s a place to dance, to most it’s where they call home.
The beautiful part is that all those definitions are right and there’s probably countless more. It’s all about letting the magic of Electric Forest permeate your visit to Rothbury in some way. Just be a good person. It’s that easy.
But one thing is for certain – there will always be an abundance of great music in the forest and we picked out some of our sets that we are expecting to be front and center for this year’s edition of the festival.
Midnight Generation
Forest is the perfect place to blend genres, and Midnight Generation is just the crew to do it. Hailing from Mexico, Midnight Generation is in their 10th year of bringing their flavor of Funk to stages all across the world. They combine aspects of pop, funk, disco, and jamtronica into a wonderful product that is perfect for the good vibes of Forest. If you believe that Forest needs more instruments, then do not miss out on these guys.
33 Below
Hailing from New Zealand, but currently based in London, 33 Below is SET to bring his unique catalog of tunes to The Forest. You can expect to hear a genre-jumping set that will no doubt include his signature emotional UKG sound, some garage, DnB, and everything in between. There is a non zero chance you walk out of this set and start calling your friends, “bruv.”
Justice
As a rule of thumb, I always try to omit headliners from lists like this because what else can really said about them, right? But Justice at Electric Forest feels like an absolute GIFT from the Forest gods and missing this set truly feels like blasphemy. Justice’s live sets can be described in 10 different ways if you ask 10 different people, but I think “Epic” might be the adjective that everyone agrees on. And with them kicking off Forest on a Thursday, it is SURE to set the tone for the weekend. It’ll be part concert, part rock opera, part progressive masterpiece.
Jerro
Jerro’s rise has often been seen as hand in hand with Lane 8’s This Never Happened imprint, but lately his releases have been more on the uptempo side, and not released on the TNH label. He spoke out on Reddit about it by saying, “As an artist I absolutely love exploring new sounds, and after many years of doing a more chill sound, I felt more inspired to take my music into a slightly different direction.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s completely done with the downtempo sound – just exploring a different style – and what better place to practice than at Electric Forest.
1tbsp
Having your music recognized under one moniker on a global scale is a challenge in itself, how about 2 monikers? That’s exactly what 1Tbsp is doing. After success with his Golden Vessel project he decided to explore house music and give birth to the 1tbsp project. Some of the coolest musical projects are birthed from ‘side projects’ as the creator is coming with a different musical background while dabbling in a new genre. Since its birth the 1tbsp project has graduated past “Side Project” status and stands on its own two legs very easily with his ethereal style of indie-house.
Nimino
After years of honing his craft and a wildly successful 2024 Fall North American Tour, Nimino is ready for the Summer Festival circuit. Birthed in the gauntlet of early 2010’s Soundcloud, Nimino has seemed to find his footing as a headliner. His mega breakout tune, “I Only Smoke When I Drink” could be heard in sets of every genre. His sets are fun. His sets are emotional. Let’s hope for a perfectly vibey sunset set time so he can set the mood.
Villager
Villager’s Music perfectly balances that line of IDM and dancier tunes and it should come as no surprise with wrtists like Jamie XX and Four Tet continuously showing support for his releases. 2025 may very well be the year of garage and 2-step in the forest with artists like Villager constantly pushing boundaries and making it onto the lineup. It might get weird, but in the best way possible.
Louis The Child
I know I know. Twice in one article that I break my rule about not writing about artists that are ‘headliners.’ But years ago I put myself on record that Louis The Child should be a part of every Forest in some capacity, so if I talk the talk, I gotta walk the walk as well. With how important Forest is to so many festival go-ers it is is important to bring in artists that not only understand the magic of the Forest, but willingly contribute to it and Louis The Child always seems to find a way to do that. Whether it’s filling in for official sets because of a last minute cancellation, or playing countless renegade sets throughout the weekend. Who can remember last year’s special set where Robby of LTC played a special set made up strictly of artists that he has seen at Electric Forest throughout the years? It was the perfect throwback set to start our Sunday with. Let’s see what they have in store for this year.
