Portland-based producer Kalaido (aka Phoenix Glendinning) is back with “Persimmons,” the second single from his upcoming album In Praise of Shadows. While “Water Candles” introduced listeners to the album’s lush, cinematic soundscape, “Persimmons” shifts gears with hard-hitting, uptempo energy inspired by early ’90s hip-hop and Bossa Nova rhythms. Fusing live instrumentation, intricate beats, and nostalgic textures, the track feels like a throwback with a fresh twist. Despite its sample-like vibe, every element was crafted by Kalaido and recorded live, featuring guitar from long-time collaborator Kennebec and vocals from LA-based opera singer Brooke DeRosa.
Inspired by a trip to Japan, the album blends personal memories with sonic exploration, weaving in field recordings and artwork by Kalaido’s wife, @endlesstakeout. With a track record that includes over 75 million streams and viral hits like “Hanging Lanterns,” Kalaido continues to carve his own lane in the instrumental music scene. “Persimmons” is a bold step forward, offering both raw rhythm and reflective depth – hear what we mean by streaming the track below and be sure to turn your speakers up for this one.
