Leave it to Boiler Room to team up with Ray-Ban and create the illest musical event ever: RAY-BAN x BOILER ROOM 006: SXSW.
Snagging STWO for a mix, we’re taught a very important lesson on the journey of music we’ve all been a part of lately with the main point being hip hop and dance culture have become synonymous. STWO blends a generously chill mix for these rough winter days we’ve been having, “with a few beats I’ve been listening to lately,” he adds. Bringing the literal idea behind Boiler Room’s latest collaboration, this mix is the perfect demonstration of showing how the two genres are, “no longer distant poles in the music world, but have brought out the best in each other,” (Boiler Room TV).
Starting off with, “Hip hop is an attitude…it’s how you feel, it’s a style,” and transitioning into a remixed version of Ryan Leslie’s “Addiction”, STWO takes it way, way back. He dips and dabbles into a few other mellow renditions of tracks like Gucci Mane’s “Pills” and a chopped versions like Drake’s “2 On” verse. He highlights the r&b and jazz influences on music that some like to forget exist, while also keeping it funky with the tracks that have actually derived from it. Ending it with a mellow version of the piano keys from Jay-Z’s “Dead Presidents”, STWO hands down pumped out one of the sickest, historical mixes that unfortunately does not come with a tracklist–EDUCATE YOURSELF.
If you’re digging this mix, be sure to catch STWO at the official Ray-Ban x Boiler Room SXSW event along with fellow artists that find the highest common factors in rap, house, R&B, and jazz including Kaytranada, Ghostface Killah, Sashu’U and more (tickets here).
