This week, Annie Mac’s hottest record in the world is a hot dance track from DJ Diplodocus aka Diplo and Sleepy Tom. I say Diplodocus specifically because this sounds like it could be off a Hollertronix mixtape. “Be Right There,” is that old school flavor with a new school kick. The vocal sample is from a 90’s R&B hit called, “Don’t Walk Away,” by R&B triad Jade. I recognized it by the second verse, Diplo and I are both dinosaurs. Nostalgia sets in as I hope readers won’t do the math on this when they find out that this song was in regular rotation at my middle school dances.
The vocals fit the style of this track to a T. It is amazing how timeless music can be, that a brand new track becomes instantly timeless because it exists in the now, but could have also existed in the past, and will probably just as relevant in the future. Artists like Diplo and Sleepy Tom live there anyway, which confuses the existential conversation I was just having, but makes even more sense when trying to place this tune. Sleepy Tom is so hot right now, and for good reason. Diplo is, always has been, and always will be, one of the hottest in my opinion, and that has nothing to do with his look. They deliver so hard on this timeless track, it is kind of ludicrous.
These two are bound to deliver no matter the circumstance, and this time around is no different. Enjoy throwback vibes and new wave dance synths on this here, there, and everywhere track, “Be Right There,” from Sleepy Tom and Diplo, on BBC Radio 1. Listen while you can.
