If you don’t know who Blackbear is by now, you are way late to the game. Though the rising hip-hop / R&B artist has been on the scene for a minute with writing credits for platinum hits like Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”, it wasn’t until last year when his solo career finally really took off after dropping off two flawless albums. Blackbear shot to the top of the Billboard and iTunes charts with his debut Digital Druglord album, which featured hits like “do re mi” and “Make Daddy Proud”, and then closed the year with his massive collaborative mixtape Cybersex that featured Ne-Yo, Riff Raff, T-Pain, THEY., FRND, and more. With over a hundred thousand fans watching, the LA hitmaker made his monumental debut at Coachella and his set was easily the best of the weekend.
He opened on a dark stage with his iconic pink mannequins and a full live band and string quartet by his side, softly singing “hell is where i dreamt of u and woke up alone” over delicate plucked strings. From there, it only got better as Blackbear swam through his collection, performing “Chateau”, “Dirty Laundry”, “Bright Pink Tims” and “Make Daddy Proud” while wearing a Gucci mask and rocking his sparkling rose gold mic. His set had everything from hip hop bangers to soulful ballads to poppy sing-along hits. Blackbear does this amazing thing when he performs live where he completely changes up the tracks from the beat, to some of the lyrics, to his vocals themselves. It’s incredibly enticing to watch him perform all of these live edits because it gives you a bit of surprise. He restructures his songs to bring the most energy and artistry to the stage and it seriously packed a punch. When he finally performed his iconic single “idfc”, the crowd lit up with their cell phone flashlights as silky strings wrapped around his emotional vocals. That in and of itself was a moment to be remembered.
And then the guests started to arrive. First up was DVBBS to debut their never before heard upcoming collaboration “idwk” (out May 4th) and now we can’t wait for it to drop. We never thought we’d hear Blackbear do electro house but he absolutely killed it and the lyrics are addictive.
If you thought it couldn’t get any better, Blackbear then brought out his mentor Ne-Yo to perform their soul-pop ballad “Top Priority” and his 2008 crooner “Miss Independent”. That in and of itself will leave you in tears. Blackbear closed out his phenomenal set performing his platinum hit single “do re mi” and watching his face light up as thousands of fans screamed the chorus was the icing on the cake. If one thing’s for sure, Blackbear seriously stole Coachella with his stellar performance.
p.s. Blackbear revealed that he’ll be bringing even more guests out for Weekend 2!!
