Earlier today, Instagram revealed their all-new @music: the first ever music-specific internally-operated account that will be, “capturing and sharing the world’s musical moments.”
“Artists are using Instagram as a companion to the art that they’re making,” said Jonathan Hull, Instagram’s head of music partnerships, in an interview with BuzzFeed News. “Musicians lead really interesting lives, and Instagram has become a way for them to show their fans who they are and to give them a look inside of their world.”
The @music account will be updated once a day, daily (aside from Mondays) and will host 11 series with content including short profiles, features, editorial series, and other spotlights on independent artists in cities around the world. Although more than 25 percent of the app’s accounts are already taken by big-time musicians, Instagram is looking to draw more attention to the dynamic, emerging talent from artists of all kinds, who are carving out a growing niche for themselves on the photo-based app: “music photographers, album illustrators, instrument makers and, of course, fans” (CEO Kevin Systrom).
What does this all mean? Basically, users like ourselves (be sure to follow OUR Instagram) will be able to stay up to date with groundbreaking music and artists that might not be the ones making the music, but play a large and vital role in how it’s shared in their respective communities. The best part of it all, this creates more space for users to be able to see more amazing work similar to that of rising tastemakers like Amber Park, Loren Wohl, King H and Raven B., who each take on a unique perspective of “art” in the music world.
The channel was celebrated with a profile launch of The Root’s drummer Questlove. Learn more about it all over on the Instagram blog.
