The 8 Best Things We Saw at Lollapalooza 2019

We had the chance to make it to Lollapalooza 2019 this summer. If you haven’t been, Lollapalooza rents out Downtown Chicago every year for what is about two weeks when you include set up and tear-down. TO this day, it is the most organized muisc festival I have had the opportunity to attend. To be able to set up shop in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world and it go off without a hitch year after year – it’s a sight to see. Here’s the list of our favorite things we saw at this year’s festival.

Win and Woo’s Breakout Set

I pegged Win and Woo as one of my breakout acts for Lollapalooza – and their set at the Tito’s stage at 7:45 on Thursday night cemented that. In a set which featured the Chicago Bulls drumline and a cameo from their friends, Louis The Child, they delivered a 45 minutes set that showcased the Chicago duo’s strengths in production and DJing. The crowd started small but slowly grew as fans of The Chainsmokers started funneling to listen to the set before the main stage act began. Win and Woo reminded Chicago who they are – and why they are going to be playing much bigger stages soon. 

Shallou’s Chop Shop Pre-Show Set

For some – Lollapalooza didn’t start on Thursday – it started on Wednesday night at one of a few ‘Pre-shows’ at venues across the city. Shallou sold out Chicago’s Chop Shop with a perfect hour and fifteen minute set to warm up the sold out crowd for a 4 day music festival. Since seeing him last, Shallou has added a couple of band members to his set – which give his more organic songs even more life. 

Watching Chance The Rapper Perform with Death Cab For Cutie For The First Time

This can be filed under ‘Things everyone knew was gonna happen – but were still super stoked when it did happen.’ (Say that five times fast). After a set of crowd favorites from Death Cab For Cutie – Chicago’s prodigal son, Chance The Rapper, joined Death Cab on stage for the first ever live performance of “Do You Remember” from Chance’s new album featuring Death Cab’s Ben Gibbard on vocals. It was one of many Chance sightings throughout the weekend. 

Alesso’s Absolutely Incredible Set

I’ve been a fan of Alesso for a very long time. He’s been bringing his performances to the states since before he was even allowed to drink here – with many calling him the 4th unofficial member of Swedish House Mafia. Sometime in the last few years he strayed away from the euphoric, progressive sound that brought him to the forefront in the first place. It was a different take on dance music that many Alesso fans weren’t necessarily in love with – mainly because it was Alesso doing it. His Lollapalooza set sounded like a set straight from 2013 – and it was the perfect way to close out Perry’s on Friday night. 

Watching Dance Music Thrive Outside Of Perry’s

2 of the best ‘dance’ acts I saw at Lollapalooza this weekend was not at Perry’s stage. Both Yaeji and Lane 8 played the American Eagle stage (Formerly known as The Grove). Although they were shorter sets – each act were able to adapt their sets to fit within the time slot and deliver their own little slice of magic. Lane 8 is known for his extremely progressive buildups – but he came out of the gates swinging for the fences as the sun set behind him. He still delivered an incredible set within his 40 minute set time.

Watching Jaron’s Dreams Come True At The Brownies and Lemonade Aftershow

This one might go without saying – but it’s awesome to see every time. Brownies and Lemonade brought their special kind of show to Chicago for the third year in a row for a Lollapalooza exclusive after party. Jaron opened the show – and to his surprise – had a chance to close out the night with a special b2b with one of his mentors, San Holo. Whether you were in the first row – or getting a drink at the bar you could feel the happiness radiating from Jaron. Up to that day he had never seen San Holo perform live – and he just got to perform WITH him.

Watching Camelphat Take Perry’s To Church

Grammy nominated Camelphat brought their take on house music to the Sunday Afternoon Perry’s crowd. Day 4 of a festival is hard to curate for anyone – especially when the sun is beating down – but Camelphat kept the crowd cool and moving with an absolutely soulful set – that for many was the first set to the last day of Lollapalooza. Bring more house music to Perry’s.

The Looks On Peoples’ Faces During Flume’s Debut Of His New Set

When Flume announced his return to Lollapalooza the entire music world looked up. They had no idea what it was going to be like. He spent most of the Summer releasing music that some would call – ‘experimental.’ So of course his set would be a bit on the experimental side. After a long hiatus, no one knew what to expect from Flume’s return – but what came was a set that was more performance art than DJ or even a live set.
