Kanye West‘s Sunday Service was one of the most unique and talked about events at Coachella this year. Attendees gathered around a large hill while Kanye and his crew performed a musical ceremony for hours, transcending the traditional and creating a new vibrant experience. Not one to miss out on a perfect branding opportunity, Kanye also unveiled an exclusive and pretty pricey “Church Merch” run to accompany his service.
Covered in religious sentiments such as “Jesus Walks” and “Trust God,” the clothing definitely made a loud statement. The religious community didn’t seem to have the same positive reaction as many festival goers, and backlash against the merchandise quickly ensued. Some dissent even came from Kanye’s step-mother Kris Jenner, who apparently had a “meltdown” from people accusing her children of profiting from religion. Regardless of the negative press, the clothing still sold out, but the website has since been taken down and no one knows whether the exclusive line will be back or not. Stay tuned for more updates on the “Church Merch” fiasco.
