ANGELZ & MOEAZY Team Up For Diabolical “ZZ” EP + Interview

You may have heard of ANGELZ, or maybe ‘Only God Knows‘. The Quebec native has reigned heaps of terror for his soul-crushing style of house music. His rare sound channels a dark blend of rap music and bass house. Getting his big start producing hits for Def Jam Records, the artist has set his eyes on another scene to conquer. Capturing the attention of many, ANGELZ is most familiar with delivering some of the craziest tracks we’ve heard come out of Tchami‘s CONFESSION label.

We’re here to deliver the news of the new “ZZ” EP released by yours truly. The 5-track embodies the producer’s diverse talent that morphs both his past and present. Teaming up with rapper MOEAZY, the two pair up to create records that simply cannot be ignored. We chatted with ANGELZ for more insight alongside a quick introduction.

What was your first experience with Electronic Music?

“I’ve been on the internet forever. Been on the forums, in the mIRC secret chat rooms where all the leaks would happen. When blogs became huge, I started discovering a lot of electronic music I didn’t even know existed. Then Justice came along and it had always felt like something I could master so I started really becoming a fan and diving in.” –ANGELZ

Who and what inspired you to start making music?

“I started producing when I was about 11 or 12, my childhood heroes are The Neptunes and Timbaland so I always knew I wanted to be a producer.” –ANGELZ

Your resume is pretty impressive considering the start you had with Def Jam Records, how did your career start in such a different direction than where it is now?

“I’ve always been a hip-hop head since I was a little kid. That’s all I knew so I started out as a hip-hop producer. I was producing any type of beat, dirty south beats, ruff ryders type beats… Starting out I was biting a lot, I was trying hard to sound like my favorite producers which lead me to try and learn why their shit was sounding so special to me. I’ve carried over a lot of my favorite’s producers techniques in my current sound.” –ANGELZ

How difficult was that crossover you took to Dance Music?

“So hard. It took me years to get my shit to sound as good as who I considered the standard. I knew I had to get there before I start being really crazy and trying to break boundaries. So I took my time and made sure I knew everything, I learned how to engineer from nothing, same for sound design and mastering.” –ANGELZ

You are a familiar face for being one of the most consistent artists to deliver on Tchami’s CONFESSION label, how did you meet the Frenchman? 

“I sent ‘Hey Girl’ to Snake who then gave it Tchami. Then 2 weeks later Tchami asked me for it to be the first song on his new label. Then 5 months later Confession was born. Nothing but respect for both of them.” –ANGELZ

This “ZZ” EP exemplifies your past and present, what inspired this project?

“This is just what’s most natural to me. I love making music and putting out music. This EP on the production side is me just expanding my toolbox and showing people that I can’t be pigeon-holed. I still feel very connected and involved in the club/house/bass house scene, which I tried to showcase on LOCHNESS. This is the one for my sets. The rest of the EP is music you can listen to anywhere. It’s always still the ANGELZ sound. 
As a whole; what started out as one session with Moeazy turned into a collab EP just because we connected as 2 high-level creatives and instantly everything we were making was just crazy. He was picking my favorite beats right away. Then he would get in the booth and take it 5 notches higher in 2 takes… Just leaving my jaw dropped on the pockets he would hit.” –ANGELZ

Can you elaborate on how you found yourself working with Moeazy?

“A crazy story we met in Sherman Oaks at the barbershop. My barber had overbooked himself so I was like ‘Aight let me go walk Ozzy (my dog) around the block I’ll come back in 15’. As I was going back in, I went through the back parking lot and saw a group of people by a car. 
I confused Moe for someone else and shouted his name, they all turned around and what could’ve been super weird ended up being hilarious because we were like ‘Oh shit you do music too? I do music too”. Then we linked up and I think we were in the studio the week after.” –ANGELZ

What statement did you want to get across with this release?

“I’m always going to be pushing boundaries whether it’s in House or Hip Hop and that’s my musical universe. You listen to me if you want the ANGELZ sound. 
Moeazy’s pen game & flows are so next level, with my beats this project is something that hasn’t been done yet and I know it because I’ve been paying attention for decades.” – ANGELZ
