With “Bodybag,” Modestep kick off their Give Up The Ghost album era in full throttle. It’s a track that digs deep into their roots while dragging their sound into darker, heavier territory — less polished, more punishing, and refreshingly unbothered by genre boundaries.
The first half hits like a warped love letter to early dubstep and 80s synth grit — thick with distorted leads, reverb-soaked snares, and a weighty, driving low-end. But before it settles into any comfort zone, Modestep pull the rug out and launch the track into a full-blown drum & bass assault. The switch-up is jarring in the best way — a left turn that reminds you they’re not here to play it safe.
Vocally, there’s just enough melody to anchor the chaos, but the real focus is the atmosphere: dystopian, aggressive, and fully locked into a sound that feels uniquely theirs. “Bodybag” doesn’t follow trends — it mutates them. And if this is the tone-setter for Give Up The Ghost, it sounds like Modestep are back with something to prove.
