Disheartening news broke when one of San Francisco’s most prominent nightclubs announced it was closing its doors. Mezzanine was the home for all kinds of weekly events. Injecting much-needed energy into San Francisco’s nightlife, this venue holds some incredible memories that will never be forgotten. After preparing to end the year in great fashion, the promoters were hit with gut-wrenching news.
On January 11th, 2019, a letter of intent was sent to Mezzanine ensuring the venue would be given the extension they were hoping for, with the added possibility of re-negotiating the lease long term. With a newly promised closing date of January 31st, 2020, the venue, acting on good faith, continued booking Fall/Winter events while waiting for the finalized lease to be signed by landlords.
On May 1st, 2019 Mezzanine was officially notified that the 3-month lease extension was no longer on the table. “After giving me a letter of intent for the lease extension, shaking my hand, hugs exchanged and giving me their word that we were SOLID, the Chrittons, drew out the lease negotiation process for 5 months and then pulled the rug out from under us,” – Deborah Jackman, Owner of Mezzanine
It will be incredibly sad to see this venue go as it continues to send the Bay Area’s nightlife into a spiral. Considering the young and diverse demographic the area holds, it is appalling just how limited the music scene is being withheld. Mezzanine was simply an iconic nightclub that hosted some of the most legendary artists, bands, and DJs.
