Crankdat has had one of the better storylines to follow over the past few years. Originally a division one athlete for Kent State track and field, he decided to let it all go to pursue music full-time. Known for his incredible remixes known as “re-cranks”, Crankdat has been aggressively breaking through the scene over the past 6 months with his own originals, including Dollars, In the Air ft. T-Pain, and now his new track Reason to Run. His buzzy bass and up-beat melody is reminiscent of a happy video game, which, whether intentionally or not, follows a perhaps up-and-coming trend in the music industry also mirrored by Porter Robinson’s new alias, Virtual Self.
With uplifting lyrics and a rebellious music video to match, Crankdat’s new hit evokes a sense of freedom and a desire to break away from day to day stresses and pressures, perhaps somewhat influenced by his own story of dropping out of college to pursue music.
With hyperbole and hype machines ever-present in the electronic music industry today, Crankdat has been not only matching but exceeding this hype, and his career arc has proven that he’s here to stay. We can’t wait to see what the rest of 2018 has in store for Christian Smith.
