Last night, Twitter erupted with many DJs, managers and music industry professionals talking about an important topic: racism and prejudice. It all started when Jai Wolf (who’s often spoken out about racism in this country in the past) called out a fan in the exchange below for voting for Trump, with Ghastly chiming in afterwards:
You are creating more racism my guy and simultaneously giving no solutions, you’re the problem
— [G H A S T L Y] (@Ghastly) September 24, 2017
Ghastly has – on more than one occasion – responded to Jai Wolf’s tweets, bringing up quite a controversy between the two producers. With the conversation being on Twitter, even more artists like Hotel Garuda, Ookay, A-Trak, and Yultron hopped in on the threads to share their opinions and support for what was being said.
Instead of complaining over twitter. Create a petition. Go protest. Not call fans racists. Use your platform to create a plan instead. https://t.co/HjeIS58MV7

perhaps you’re confusing racism with prejudice…racism involves historical position of power over another race, which non whites never had
— Hotel Garuda (@hotelgaruda) September 24, 2017
@JaiWolfx I’m down with what you’re saying bro.
— Cannibal Aux (@atrak) September 24, 2017
Nothin but love and respect for y’all though. I 100% understand what you’re saying as well.
— Yultron (@yultron) September 24, 2017
yo so much respect. hope to see ya soon !!!
— brasstracks (@brasstracks) September 24, 2017
Ultimately, the producers decided that many Americans need to be educated about racism, especially while we’re living in a Trump America. Moe Shalizi, manager to artists like Mashmello, Ookay, Ghastly, Tiesto, and Slushii, also joined the conversation to express that, while Jai Wolf and Hotel Garuda’s points are valid, they should find a better outlet to educate their fans besides Twitter.
Hey @JaiWolfx @hotelgaruda I really respect your passion and I can relate as an Afghan American. But y not do something bigger than tweet?
— Moe Shalizi (@shalizi) September 25, 2017
In a separate thread, rapper Lil Aaron and producer duo Brasstracks began discussing the difference between prejudice and racism with the goal to educate others. It’s unknown whether their conversation was sparked by Jai Wolf’s or was simply an ironic coincidence.
as a white male with a conservative upbringing i understand how this might be hard to grasp but u actually cant be racist against white ppl
— lil aaron (@lilaaron911) September 24, 2017
you can b prejudice. not racist. when we speak of racism, gotta remember the years of systemic oppression…. white ppl never had that
— brasstracks (@brasstracks) September 24, 2017
The conversations started by Jai Wolf, Hotel Garuda, Brasstracks and Lil Aaron led to even more artists sharing their thoughts on the subject at hand. While many argued that Twitter may not be the best place to have these kinds of discussions and that another outlet might better help educate fans, I will share one personal opinion. I do appreciate these artists speaking out for what they believe and agree that there is a lot of misunderstanding and confusion regarding social injustice in the country. While some say Twitter is not the best outlet for this sort of conversation, Twitter is the largest social media outlet for artists to connect with their fans and will likely continue to be their outlet for these discussions until someone suggests something better. Maybe a Reddit AMA dedicated to this topic is something we’ll see in the future, but for now, that place is Twitter.
It’s astounding to what extent racial bias and systemic oppression are still completely misunderstood.

Spread love, not hate. We are all in this together.

I WILL BE AS LOUD AS I FUCKING WANT WHEN IT COMES TO FIGHTING BULLIES AND INJUSTICE! ????????
— Justin Martin (@mrJUSTINMARTIN) September 23, 2017

— GR0UNDISLAVA (@Groundislava) September 24, 2017
Hey we should turn twitter beefs into a huge dinner where we talk peacefully and eat salami and stuff thatd be great
— habby (@habstrakt) September 25, 2017
Oliver Heldens, 3LAU, and Shaun Frank are also down for Hotel Garuda and Habstrakt‘s hypothetical DJ beef roundtable. Hopefully, they’ll follow through and host an event like this and maybe even livestream it, as Shuan Frank suggested, so fans can bare witness and join in the much needed conversation.
