In an age where electronic music has largely been commodified and reduced from an art form to a business of remixes, streaming plays, and festival appearances, its not often that we stumble across a release unconcerned with appealing to these ends. Yet as most producers clamor for their “piece of the pie” there always seem to be those special few who stay true to the spirit of music making– artists who genuinely need to express themselves through music. These are the artists who shape the musical landscape and help form the trends that so many others follow… and it’s exactly what we find in NastyNasty as he prepares to release his most recent album, Broken Moon, on Saturate Records (who always seems to be a step ahead of curve when it comes to electronic music, maybe its a timezone thing?).
After going through a few really tough years in his personal life, the Bay Area native is back with some catharsis and its hard not appreciate the emotional depth the album captures without resorting to the RnB vibe we usually associate with “feelsy” music (of course this is a different range of emotions than your contemporary love ballad). Whether NastyNasty intended it or not, each track manages to capture some of the anxiety / heaviness of the events in his life and it really helps add a dimension that’s rarely seen in bass music. Though the whole album won’t be available until the 18th of this month, you can listen to Desert Sun below for a taste of what’s to come and be sure to catch NastyNasty as he goes on tour this month with homies Sayer, Conrank and G Jones (Dates below). And don’t forget to follow Saturate! Records on all the socials so you can get a heads up on the free album download! You know… if you’re in to that kind of thing *cough*DJs*cough* <3
Since 2008, the entity known to Earthlings simply as NastyNasty has been churning out a cornucopia of low frequency delights that open up dark matter portals on the dance floor. After a impressive string of releases on influential labels such as Rwina, Planet Mu, Mau5trap, & STYLSS, and a good run of high-energy live sets, the man– so Nasty you must say it twice– kind of just vanished for a bit. Barreling through what he himself refers to as “The Great Dubstep Implosion of 2012”, and turmoil in his own life, Jasper Reeder aka NastyNasty toiled in the shadows, reaching further into the bass cave to unearth new squelches. What came from all that time away is now immensely evident in this new album “Broken Moon” on Saturate! Records. Speaking about the creation process for this release, Japser shares with us that, “Over the time I spent writing these songs I watched a lot of worlds end; I lost both my grandfathers, I lost longtime friendships, I ended my long term relationship, I watched my parents separate and I fought desperately with my own depression and addiction. These songs are both my front row seat and my way of dealing with that chapter in my life…taking a giant swing at one of my own moons to clear space for a better world.” Indeed, the devastating bass found here could likely dismantle any lunar surface, cracking it to the core.
