I first met Robby Hauldren and Freddy Kennett of Louis the Child a few months back when they played a one-stop show in our nation’s capital. No tour manager in sight, the two teenage producers sat on the grass by the Reflecting Pool. It was a sunny August day but the boys were swagged out in their all black everything, sick LTC swag, and ???? emoji hat. At the time, I had no idea that a mere month later these boys would drop the undisputed song of the summer, “It’s Strange feat. K. Flay.”
They were a humorous duo, making more “Oh You Mean Sonny” jokes than an LA industry party but what really caught me was their natural maturity and laidback demeanor. It was clear that the momentum of their career has molded them both into incredibly wise individuals. Despite the X’s on their hands, these two kids killed it at their show later that night and dropped an unbelievably hype mix, ranging from Moving Castle’s “Helix 2.0” to their own, at the time unreleased, single “It’s Strange”.
Over the past year, Louis The Child have shattered the assumptions about young electronic musicians and risen to become a prominent tastemaker in today’s Soundcloud generation. With a single with over 2 million streams and a FIFA placement, a résume filled with dozens of headlining and festival lineups, and a cosign from Taylor Swift, Louis The Child are thrilled to announce a massive long-awaited winter tour. Scoop the dates below, peep their playlist for us and check out our conversation with the dream team behind LTC.
Run The Trap: So who is Louis and whose child is he?
Louis The Child: Louis is the child of his father.
RTT: LOL so how did you guys meet?
LTC: We first met at a Madeon show where we merely introduced ourselves to each other. A few months later we started talking over Facebook because we had a mutual interest in electronic music. We decided to meet up and make some music and we clicked right away. The rest is history.
RTT: Wow that’s crazy! So how would you describe your sound or genre?
LTC: Your guess is as good as ours.
RTT: You guys are super young. This past year must be have been quite the unexpected experience. What have been some of your highlights over the past year and what insane adventures have you been on?
LTC: This has definitely been an incredible year for us. One big highlight was getting to tour with one of our idols, Madeon. Getting to play at incredible venues around the country on two separate tours with him was eye opening for us. His fans were very receptive to our music and Hugo is a great person to hang with. Another huge highlight was the initial reception that It’s Strange got. It got to #1 on Hype Machine within 24 hours and had over a million plays in the first 10 days which is the best response we’ve ever gotten on a song. Getting it placed in FIFA was also very crazy for us. So many people play the game and it always boasts an awesome soundtrack so being selected for it was an honor.
LTC: We’ve been a big fan of K.Flay for a while. We actually all went to the same high school (at different times of course). We reached out to her over Twitter DMs and we both talked about how we wanted to work with each other. We sent her a playlist of song ideas we had and she said she liked the beat we had for It’s Strange the most and started writing. When she sent back her idea we freaked out. We absolutely loved her lyrics and how her voice sounded on the track. From there we crafted the song around her vocals and added the drop.
RTT: But the real question – who’s better at FIFA?
LTC: Probably Freddy, he’s definitely a better soccer player in real life, too.
RTT: Let’s talk about this tour. This is HUGE! Congrats! What are you most excited for on this upcoming tour?
LTC: Going to different cities and meeting all sorts of people along the way. It’s incredible to meet fans all over the world and see how they connect with our music. We love talking with everyone and getting to connect.
RTT: What do you planned for the remainder of 2015?
LTC: Lots of stuff 😉
RTT: Taylor Swift made a cute little playlist. What would be in your playlist?
LTC: That’s a tough one. Hmmm…
RTT: Last question: can you guys stump each other playing two truths and a lie?
- I have never gotten a cavity
- I lost those noise-canceling earbuds since you’ve last seen me
- You’re the first person I texted after hearing the T Swift news
- I’m left handed
- My brother is also left handed
- I can grow a better beard than Robby.
