We chopped it up with one of Soulection’s quickest rising talents. Lakim talks to us about Future Bounce, joining the Soulection Tribe, and eating on the road.
RTT: When did you start making music and what influenced you to do so?
LAKIM: I come from a pretty musical background. My grandmother was a singer in a group back in the 60’s. My grandfather was a DJ at the local radio station for 20+ years and my dad also DJ’d and made beats. My main influences would be Dilla, Three 6 Mafia, and Daft Punk.
RTT: Tell us about ‘Future Bounce’
LAKIM: It came from this song I made called “Future Bounce” sampling Crystal Waters. I thought that the name described what musical direction I was going in at the time so I decided to run with it. Feel good, uptempo, and very dance heavy. It’s not the only kind of music I do but it’s probably the one that people know me most for.
RTT: How did you link with Joe Kay and Soulection?
LAKIM: I’ve known of Joe since his podomatic days as Joe Dilla, lol… We’ve always had mutual respect for each other but it was Kronika, another Soulection DJ and close friend, that connected us musically. I released my EP, “Esoteric”, through them and I’ve been down ever since going on almost 4 years now.
RTT: Sound-wise, what direction do you see Soulection heading?
LAKIM: We’re just going keep innovating and trying to push out sound in a new direction but still remain ourselves. I think everyone in the crew is gonna start leaning towards adding more live instrumentation. As long as the music is honest, fans will support us and what we do.
RTT: What are you listening to right now?
LAKIM: Currently jamming the new Jay Rock and Foreign Exchange albums. Quality stuff.
RTT: What’s your favorite thing to eat when you’re on tour?
LAKIM: When you’re on the road, time is pretty limited. It’s usually go straight to the gig and dip out the next morning. But if I can, I’ll try to get something that that locals like to at least eat what they are loving. Since we coming to Chi-town, I’m coming for that Harold’s chicken this time, haha. That Portillo’s was love last go-round.
