Electronic dance music’s class clown, Dillon Francis, recently sat down with MTV News to discuss a number of things including his upcoming moombahton EP, his current musical inspiration, and the future of his music as a whole.
Dillon said he is currently inspired by Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR‘s Wednesday Night Interlude — “I listen to that song at least ten times a day and I cannot stop listening to it, and I kind of think that’s really where I want to take this next album that I do.”
Inspiration is everything for Francis, who like other artists, “have to be inspired by something to keep making it”.
Furthermore, Dillon shared that he wants to make music that will piss people off in terms of the sound that his fans have come to expect from him. Too often listeners only expect to hear a certain sound from a certain artist and become upset when that sound changes, potentially putting the artist in a type of creative hold.
Lastly, Dillon touched on his upcoming moombahton project, which he announced via Instagram a few months ago. The project is on track to drop this summer and includes collaborations with the likes of Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Bro Safari, and more. The EP almost didn’t make it to the finish line — ““I was going to stop doing the project if it didn’t sound new,” Francis told MTV. “[But] I played the moombahton EP for a lot of people and it’s so cool because it sounds like the old stuff, but it sounds like really new. So it’s not like you’re taking a step back.”
