2014 was quite the year for What So Not. Both Flume and Emoh Instead catapulted themselves further into the minds and ears of fans all over the world. After finishing their 2013 with a bang by releasing a fantastic music video for their smash hit “Jaguar,” news hit that Skrillex and Flume were hitting the studio. They supposedly finished up a track during Holy Ship, but we’ve just recently heard a demo version start to float around.
This wouldn’t be the only collab What So Not would be involved in throughout the year though. In March they teamed up with RL Grime to release one of the biggest tunes of the year “Tell Me” which can still be heard in plenty of sets 9 months after it’s release.
While What So Not was a headliner at many festivals all over the U.S. and Canada during the Summer, fans quickly found out that Flume and Emoh rarely performed together. And with Flume’s popularity skyrocketing and after his Lorde remix took the world by storm, it only made since that he perform as himself while Emoh carried the What So Not banner. This was not a bad thing however as both musicians were able to entertain hundreds of thousands of fans all across the globe.
Unfortunately due to them not touring together, there is a common misconception that Emoh is just the “DJ” for What So Not and that Flume does the majority of the production. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Emoh is an amazing producer in his own right, and those horns that What So Not are known for actually come from him. Also if you look at Instagram photos that get posted from artists who are “hitting the studio with What So Not,” Emoh is usually the only one pictured.
While Tell Me was the only track What So Not put out in 2014, they did team up with a whiskey company to release a single now known as “Play Packs” through an app. However, they managed to crank out 4 stunning mixes that I’m still listening to. The first being their debut BBC Radio 1 mix, the second being their set from EDC Las Vegas, third was an exquisite mix they posted right before Emoh went on tour in Europe, and lastly a massive Triple J takeover that Emoh did with RL Grime and Skrillex.
Even with the amazing year these two have had, 2015 looks even brighter. What So Not have an EP coming out towards the beginning of the year that includes their unreleased collaboration with Dillon Francis and most likely their collab with Skrillex entitled “Goh.” Not only that, but Flume is set to release his highly anticipated sophomore album. No official release dates have been given for either of these collectives of work so we will all have to sit and wait in anticipation to see what 2015 will bring from this phenomenal Australian duo.
