One man’s pain is another man’s pleasure. After recent health problems resulting in the cancellation of all Avicii tour dates, 23-year-old Kygo filled in for the Swedish DJ, and boy are people excited. We have more than just a good feeling that Kygo, also known as Kyrre Gorvell-Dahll, is on the brink of an insanely awesome career explosion, but that’s easy to say for anyone who was already a fan.
He’s played at TomorrowWorld and just finished up his endless summer tour; Billboard categorizes him as the, “[f]rat-boy good looks with surfer style”; leaders of the electronic-music cult including Diplo have cosigned his work; he’s in the process of recording for HBO’s Entourage; he scored one of the biggest record deals of 2014 in one-album deal with Ultra Records and Sony International; r&b singer The Weekend reached out for a remix; and, the kid hasn’t even dropped his album yet. Several classify his music as “tropical house” but, while majority of the songs on his Soundcloud indeed have that relaxed, summer beach house feel, the Norwegian producer doesn’t want that “sub-genre” to be the end all be all: “I want my music to be strong enough to reach beyond that,” he tells Billboard, “Coldplay doesn’t have to stay within a certain genre, they just go where they go.”
However, we already know where this is going to go. Kygo’s debut album–set to be released in April 2015–will not be billed as EDM but instead “global pop”. If it don’t make dollars, then it don’t make sense, so this album needs to be “accessible enough to draw in the ‘cool college kids as well as frat boys”, according to Ultra Records Founder Patrick Moxey.
Regardless of the genre his music is classified as, there is no doubt that Kygo will be crushing the game with his unmatched sounds. Out of all the songs on his cloud, only two have less than one million plays. His infamous Ed Sheeran “I See Fire” remix had a combined 43 Million plays between YouTube and Soundcloud. This 23-year-old producer/DJ has easily proven he will not be stopped. Checkout his BBC Guest Mix for Diplo & friends, if you haven’t already, and get a feel for this star before he fully explodes.
