Float with Bask, the latest album from Edamame
This week prolific producer Edamame released his 12th album. Released through label Gravitas, this album’s production quality offers listeners even more evidence of his sound’s upward trajectory.
And though the album itself is a body of work that seems Aristotelianly to equal more than the sum of its parts, its sixth track, a collaborative joint with producer Ian Ewing titled “Mango Pulp,” warrants special attention. It’s not so much a track as a composition, eschewing the conventions of verse + hook to create the sort of texturally varied soundscape that informs its galaxy of moods.
Leading with a delicate koto loop laced with reverb-accented clapping blocks, the track drives into an emotionally ambiguous (and thus emotionally compelling) synth that sounds like a singing bionic toucan. Easing into an abbreviated trough, the zooming phaser melody reconciles the lull before bridging to a smile-inducing outro. The whole thing is pleasing in the way that the theatre of a tiny bird hatching from a curiously colored egg is pleasing.
In preparing for liftoff upon listening, download the entire album, remembering to switch any electronic devices to airplane mode during flight.
