Last month, Great Dane released his sophomore album Beta Cat on Alpha Pup Records. The album is a dark, hard-hitting compilation of some of the most interesting and distinctive sounds to come out in 2014.
By far one of the most diverse albums to come out of the Team Supreme collective, Great Dane takes some seriously big risks with Beta Cat: the combination of harsh and aggressive synth lines heard on tracks like “Daisy,” with soft and melodic percussion as heard on “Swinger,” might not be what most producers go for, but Great Dane says fuck it… in this case, the risk is well worth the reward.

There are tracks, however, that combine this sense of tough love. “Killum,” is a great example of Great Dane creatively combining both elements. Beta Cat also shows Dane’s west coast hip hop inspirations, especially on the track “Down” which uses a smooth keyboard and jazzy electric guitar on top of a stripped down drum kit; the sine wave line towards the end also has some west coast vibes.
Overall Beta Cat is a fine piece of work from start to finish. Somewhat similar to his debut album, yes, but it seems as though Great Dane took a big leap in creativity on this one. Again: high risk = high reward.
