Modern funk-master Dâm-Funk and the dogfather Snoopzilla have teamed up as 7 Days Of Funk and we’ve finally got a streaming preview of their debut, self-titled album. Set to release December 10, this 8-track album is a clear indicator that west-coast g-funk is alive and well. From NPR’s Brandon Bussolini:
7 Days of Funk reestablishes the mothership connection between the hyperhuman sprawl of Los Angeles and a higher self zooming around in interstellar space. Dâm-Funk clearly enjoys the ungainly wallop of vintage rhythm boxes, which clomp along with all their human-aping imprecisions, while stargazing synthesizer pads smear petroleum jelly on the lens.
With the rise in popularity of trap music over the last few years, we’ve already seen many elements of 80’s and 90’s hip hop re-purposed and incorporated into more contemporary music… could this be a sign that 2014 will be the year that g-funk makes a comeback? And if g-funk is coming back, does that mean we’ll finally see Dr. Dre drop that (new?) album? (that-which-must-not-be-named)
There was once a dream that was Rome, you could only whisper it… Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish…
