If you’re a fan of the Soulection crew, you’ll definitely be interested in Sango‘s brand new album. A follow-up to Da Rocinha (released in the summer of 2012) Da Rocinha 2 is another incredible display of Sango’s producing abilities and really highlights what I expect to be the sound of 2014.
Dense with choice (mostly Portuguese) samples and clean 808 rhythm-work, Da Rocinha 2 (named after the largest favela in Brazil) is absolutely Sango’s best work to date. While many of the tracks have certain stylistic similarities inherent to Sango’s production style, the album manages to keep a dynamic feeling moving from track to track that really makes Da Rocinha 2 a pleasant listening experience from beginning to end. In the process, Sango showcases many of the musical features I believe will be prominent in 2014: melodic short-vocal-samples, world-drums, and a return to a certain ’90s R&B production aesthetic (don’t worry if you’re confused, I’ll be doing an in-depth post on this soon enough). As the icing on the cake, Sango’s use of Portuguese names and artwork to really help create an exotic vibe surrounding this album.
Personal favorites include Pra Nós, Me dê Amor (Feat. Gaiola das Popozudas), and Por Tudo. The album is available right here to stream for free or you can purchase it for the low, low price of $1 through Sango’s bandcamp. Support your favorite artists! Unless they don’t need it, then support your next favorite artist who does need it. Some of us are starving out here! (literally).
