Shout it from the rooftops, sing it all across the country! Skrillex is back, officially! While everyone out there might be trudging through a case of the Mondays, OWSLA front man Skrillex and label-mate Alvin Risk have officially released their Try It Out EP on iTunes. Dropping three remixes today, the Try It Out EP is the first real Skrillex release we have gotten all year. The Captain of the Mothership spent the better part of the last few years bridging the gap; introducing what was previously considered to be the underground to the mainstream, pushing dance music into the global limelight. Then 2013 rolled around, and Skrillex’s solo persona seemed to take a bit of a back seat. It was the year Dog Blood‘s acid techno sound destroyed the masses and pushed the boundaries. It was the year Jack U enigmatically surfaced, promising exciting new sounds. But Sonny hasn’t released anything solely as Skrillex all year until now, and it could not be more exciting to finally watch as new music is unveiled and that signature Skrillex sound begins to rattle people’s skulls again.
The Try It Out EP features three mixes of the hard- hitting, wild dubstep track that Skrillex and Alvin have always been known to play during their sets over the last few years. All three of the versions released today come from a series of 8 remixes of the song the pair produced, and all three feature distinct influences from both Alvin and Sonny. The other 5 versions remain unreleased, but the three we all got today should satisfy for now. Two remixes of the song were teased last week, one of which, the “Neon Mix”, was accompanied by an in-your-face music video; a chronicling of the DJ life, complete with cameos by all the OWSLA-friends and more familiar faces living the lives of the modern day rock star. The “Try Harder Mix” features a revised intro and a second drop that is so heavy it could make your teeth fall out of your mouth. Finally released today, the “Put Em Up Mix” elevated Try It Out to a whole new level, as OWSLA further proves they are at the very top of their game.
Through various interviews, previewing new tracks using festival hoards as guinea pigs, and the slow release of new sounds online, Skrillex has been alluding to a massive comeback, if you could even call it that, giving fans reason to believe that a slew of new jaw-dropping Skrillex bass music is just around the corner. Today’s new EP with Alvin Risk may be the beginning of that tidal wave of fresh new tunes we are all excited to be absolutely crushed by. Having announced a short club tour across the US and Europe, Skrillex is gearing up to put his show back on, bringing great trap music on the road with him too. The tour features Sonny with Valentino Khan, Koan Sound, 12th Planet and Bro Safari along for the ride to close out the year in classic Skrillex fashion. So do yourself a favor and grab the EP, turn the volume up as high as it goes, and grab the bull by the horns on this fine Monday. Try it out, then try it again, then go for a third one, and kick today’s ass to some new Alvin Risk and Skrillex.
