The long awaited release of Michal Menert‘s Space Jazz album is finally upon us. The Colorado based producer has made waves over the past decade to help revolutionize a new sound known by many as ‘electro-soul’ – a fusion of hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz, and heavy electro synths among other ingredients. Some would say Menert has been overshadowed by Pretty Lights over the years, and has yet to really make the impact that is deserving of his true vision. Space Jazz showcases Menert’s sound and gives way to a new path for the striving artist. Since leaving Pretty Lights Music, Michal has started his own label, Super Best Records, which has helped to revive a sound that may have seemed lost and even over saturated in a competitive and ever growing scene. Many of the albums released through Super Best will be pressed onto vinyl records, bringing the whole sampling movement full circle, Menert has a vision and Space Jazz will help you to hear it.
The album itself is a 15 track LP, displaying those spacey synths and cool drops we’ve come to love from Menert while staying true to the hip-hop beat. Blends of melody lines and horn solo’s, original lyrics, and even some live drums sculpt the album into what it truly is, Jazz from outer space, and it doesn’t seem like Menert has any plans on returning to planet Earth anytime soon. The record features collaborations from several notable artists including Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), Borahm Lee (Break Science), Manic Focus, and SuperVision to name a few. This album is a work of art, and Michal Menert is a true artist in every sense of the word.
