Seattle-based alternative R&B and electro-soul artist FEM du lit has released their anticipated new single, “BANKRUPT.” As you’ll hear below, this smooth, cathartic track explores the disillusionment of chasing the American dream while yearning for simple joys. As the fourth single from the act’s debut album, STIGMATA (out February 28), “BANKRUPT” reflects on the struggles of investing in artistry amidst end-stage capitalism.
Opening with the powerful line, “This business is troubling me… how can I invest in myself if you’re depleting all of my energy?” the song channels the raw emotion of an independent artist navigating systemic barriers. Musically, the captivating single blends laid-back drum fills by Lily M Tahar, vibrant bass grooves from Zora Seboulisa, and a standout sax feature by Obsvdian (Xiomara Mills-Dupree), with rich harmonies and FEM du lit’s soulful vocals evoking Lady Wray, SWV, and Stevie Wonder.
The artist behind FEM du lit is Francesca Eluhu, a Seattle-based singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist of French and Congolese descent. Drawing from influences like Mereba, Liv.e, and Salami Rose Joe Louis, Francesca’s solo project ventures boldly into electro-soul, following their work with Seattle’s Day Soul Exquisite. Released on La fem records, “BANKRUPT” sets the stage for STIGMATA, inviting listeners to reflect, move, and embrace liberation in every form.
