Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky has dominated headlines for the past three weeks following his arrest in Stockholm for assault on July 2nd. Since his incarceration in a Swedish pre-trial detention center, celebrities like Justin Bieber, Kanye West, and even President Donald Trump have advocated for his release and more than 600,000 fans have signed A$AP Mob’s #JusticeForRocky petition.
Today, Swedish authorities have officially charged Rocky with aggravated assault. Rocky and two of his crew members will remain in the Swedish custody until their court date, which the Stockholm District Court will announce next week. Prosecutor Daniel Suneson said in a statement Thursday that he filed charges against Rocky and two others, “suspected of assault causing actual bodily harm, having come to the conclusion that the events in question constitute a crime and despite claims of self-defense and provocation.” If convicted, Rocky could face up to six years in prison for his crime. However, if Rocky is found not guilty, he could be paid more than $2 million as compensation for the dozen festival performances he’s had to cancel since his incarceration. Rocky and his legal team maintain that he was acting in self-defense. Stay tuned for more as this story develops.
