Run The Trap’s Favorite Sets from Lollapalooza 2017

Lollapalooza 2017 kicked off on a less than dry Thursday with an early evacuation, but that was the only hiccup of the weekend. Chicago was once again blessed with star-studded performances as festival goers flocked to the downtown music festival. Not only did Chicago thrive all weekend from the festival  itself but the party kept going all night with aftershows scattered at prestigious venues throughout the city. Run The Trap had the honor of attending the 2017 rendition of the festival once again – and we picked out some of our favorite performances from the weekend.

Mura Masa

I got to catch this upcoming UK producer a few months earlier in the city but my curiosity got the best on how he’d perform to a festival crowd. I’m glad to say that it did because it led me right to his performance at the Pepsi stage where he brought out Bonzai to accompany him in his performance that day. Starting with “Around the world” his trap hit with Desiigner and then ending with the fan favorite Fireflies, Mura Masa kept the crowd alive and joyful throughout his whole set.

Joey Bada$$

This is one of the few rappers I have never had the chance to see perform live and so I rushed early to the Pepsi stage to catch him on the last day and boy did he make it worth it. When Pro Era coming out to hype him right before his performance, the crowd went absolutely nuts, fans got to listen all his signature hits and really, Joey gave a memorable performance that’ll possibly be cemented into Lolla history.

Migos

I know, I know, they showed up late but listen, they really did make a badass entrance showing up in a helicopter and to be fair, there were allegedly a 100,000+ people lining up to see them so it sort of makes sense that a lot of people didn’t properly get to enjoy the performance. Regardless, they delivered an iconic performance that is bound to stay in all festival goers memories, one way or another.

Getter

Another DJ I’ve never gotten the chance to see live, Honestly that friday I really was missing some of the wubs and dubs you usually see at festivals so I really had to check his set out. More than the performance itself, as great as it was, it was the way Getter controlled the crowd throughout his entire set that really got me. The man singlehandedly got an entire crowd to get down, dirty and really really wild to his dubstep hits. Even with the oversaturation of the dubstep market, Getter really did prove with his performance that there’s still a lot of fight left in dubstep.

Porter Robinson

Having seen porter 3 times already I didn’t really think that he’d get me this time, that i’d be touched by this performance once again because I’ve already been exposed to it. I’m honestly really happy to report that I was, once again, in tears (not because his performance was cut 20 minutes short) but because he synergized his worlds set with his shelter set to bring out the best of both worlds. By far my favorite performance of the entire festival

Whethan

At just 18 years old, local producer and DJ drew a huge crowd at The Tito’s Stage on Sunday night. His set opened up with the Chicago drumline and had cameos from Louis The Child and Oliver Tree. It was the definition of a ‘hometown throwdown’ similar to Louis The Child’s debut Lollapalooza set in 2016. He showed composure, and a maturity that I’ve seen artists double his senior lack. The sky is the limits for this young producer – and Lollapalooza proved that.

Wingtip

I raved about Wingtip’s set the week leading up to Lollapalooza – and I am so excited that I was right. His 45 minute set might have been the most I’ve danced in a long time. He unveiled his new remix for San Holo, and played some other unreleased goodies in between a great blend of future bass hits. His enthusiasm and energy was second to none and truly felt grateful for every single person in the audience. Make sure this kid is on your radar.

Year after year, Lollapalooza continues to be the most well organized music festival I have ever been to. The amount of logistics that goes into bringing in 100,000 people to the heart of one of the nation’s busiest cities is a task that is no easy feat. Chicago weather threw a wrench into plans day 1, but days 2, 3 and 4 went off without a hitch. It’s an honor to be able to go to festivals such as this. Until next time, Lolla.
