Party Favor has been on a tear recently. Coming off of the Twonk Di Nation tour with Brillz, playing Coachella, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been making music. He just dropped a straight banger titled “Bust ‘Em” that you’re about to hear all festival season long. Even with his busy schedule, Dylan was kind enough to take some time out of his day and sit down to chat with us about what he’s been up to. Check out the exclusive interview and peep his latest production below.
Would you like to introduce yourself?
I am Dylan AKA Party Favor
What kind of vibe did you have in mind when getting in the studio for your new track, Bust Em Up?
I wanted to create something specifically for my sets.I found this sample I kind of liked it, and I re-recorded it with my voice originally. I liked it a lot. So it was going to go into my sets originally as like a ‘pump-up’ DJ tool or whatever. And people actually liked it and were requesting it, so I said to myself…Ok maybe there’s something actually here. Then I reached out to the Two Fresh guys to help me re-record the vocals. So we did that and finished the track out. It just kind of started as a DJ tool that turned into a full-fledged record seemed to gravitate towards. It’s so simple but it just turned into a catchy tune.
So will Bust Em Up be on your EP that’s coming out soon-ish?
Originally it was supposed to, but it actually turned into a stand along signal. My EP is going to be I think late May or early June. So Bust Em Up is like a warm-up of big things coming.
What can you tell us about your EP?
It’s going to be 5 tracks. It’s all sorts of stuff. I’ve gotten a bit more known for heavier trap/ twerk sort of stuff in the past and I’m sort of branching out to more melodic type stuff on one spectrum, but still keeping my sound alive in there. It’s a little bit like, “Here’s the new party favor as well as the stuff you know and love. It’s a great hybrid of both I think.” It’s me showing my progression as an artist but not completely abandoning the sound that people have grown to known me for. There’s a track on there will Dillon Francis I’m totally stoked about – A totally moombahton record.
So you’re playing both weekends at Coachella, right?
Yeah! I just played this past weekend, and I will be heading back there to play on Sunday again.
How was weekend one?
Honestly, weekend one was insane dude. The coachella set was crazy. It was awesome playing in one of the only air conditioned places on the festival grounds. The place was going crazy. Obviously the Diplo and Friends lineup is just stacked- so we were able to just have a really big group of really talented people playing music there all day. It’s not really a ‘ticketed place’ but if you saw the crowd you would agree that it’s a ‘sold out’ crowd.
So tell me about this mini tour you have going on with Valentino Khan right now?
Oh man. It’s been next level. Valentino is one of my favorite artists right now and we both have a lot of mutual respect towards each other, and we talked about doing a tour or at least playing together before. And things just kind of fell into place and it worked out where we could get to play. Unfortunately we couldn’t do more shows since we have been so busy and are going to be busy for festival season and radius clauses got in the way. Any market that we had free we decided to get right in there. The crowds have been responding so well. I think of the 7 we’ve done we have had 1 not sold out. So it’s been super neat to have great crowds for every show.
The tour is called the ‘Call Us Now’ tour and you guys are having some fun with your fans for it, right?
So we wanted to have a way for us to interact with our fans more. Now a days a lot of social media kind of cripple your reach and make it harder to reach your fans. So we really wanted a chance to kind of do something fun with our fans and this tour, and be able to talk with them directly. The whole thing was a play on those livelinks commercial, you know those commercials you see late at night where you call a phone number and a supposedly pretty girl talks to you on the phone for 1 dollar a minute? Just kind of us having fun. We have a phone number that people can leave messages on, we have something like 500 messages on there and its growing every day, and we listen to so many of them. When we are together, we will actually answer the phone and talk to the fans. It’s just been such a fun experiment, and we’ve had such cool chances to interact with our fans.
For this next question, it’s ok to brag a little. How awesome is it to see Bap U in a commercial?
*Laughs* It’s definitely crazy. It’s one of those moments that when it finally happens, it’s like a pinch me moment. Like, “Wow, this is actually happening.” It’s validating. You kind of take for granted that when you watch any media how innundated you are with different sounds and stuff and here I am, watching TV and I will have friends and family call me to say “Hey we just heard you on TV!” I also have a new one coming out with Mountain Dew pretty soon – It’s a pretty ridiculous commercial. You’re just going to have to wait and see.
Gotta get to the important stuff – If you were a Thanksgiving dish, what would you be?
Oh shit. Yo, I’d be pumpkin pie. Everyone wants to be dessert, you know?
Anything else you would like to add or things that Party Favor fans should be keeping an eye out for?
Obviously Bust Em Up, but also we’re shooting the music video for it next weekend. It’s going to be hilarious. It’s going to be like throwback, retro really just bad films. Like Bollywood movies that are just packed with god awful special effects and overplayed everything. Everything is so over the top bad, but it’s going to be so funny with the high energy music played through out it. I’m excited.
Are you going to be in the music video?
I will be, and there will be quite a few cameos as well from some big dogs. It’s going to be like me and my friends filming a movie with a high production value. It’s going to be the best kind of shitty. Bad Bollywood action scenes with my song playing over it. Like a dude shoots a car and it flips four or five times that absolutely will not work. I just wanted to do a music video that would stick out and not just be girls twerking. It’s just so over the top done, I wanted something fun and different. The song is going to make people dance no matter what, so why not have some fun with the music video.
