If you’re an active musician on SoundCloud, there’s no doubt you’ve had more problems with the mobile app than most “consume-only” users. With the current SoundCloud app, there’s no hiding the fact that one’s personal profile is not the focus– it takes a careful navigation through several menus before one can access their own tracks and once there, sharing of any kind of was difficult of not impossible (especially for private tracks, the preferred method of sharing unreleased or incomplete music).
The people at SoundCloud were listening and today we have the release of SoundCloud Pulse for Android (iOS is in development) which aims at providing a mobile experience more tuned to the creator. The current app can:
- Reply to comments on your tracks, on the go
- Get up-to-date stats on the performance of your tracks
- Share your sounds, both publicly and privately
- Follow other users
and they’re hoping to eventually roll out more functionality, like messaging, track description editing and uploads. You can read more about the app on the SoundCloud blog.
It will be interesting to see if/how they try to make money off of this (maybe extra features for premium members?) but overall it sounds like a long-awaited, gratuitous step in the right direction for creators with all levels of account ownership. Could it be that SoundCloud is actually interested in serving its artist community? Perhaps…
Now, how about a way to turn off reposts that doesn’t require a third-party plugin for my browser? (Say that to someone over 50 and see what kind of look they give you)
