Kadington – Don’t Kick the Cat EP

While there exists a multitude of wrong in the emerging new faces of dance music, with too many trying so desperately to revive of keep alive dying EDMs that I had long ago written off as dead, there is so much right in the wonderful world of music; the world that is larger than the sum of all of its parts. EDM is dead to me, along with the killed concepts and ideals of yesteryear. Past and present are nonexistent when you live in the future. Nothing matters in the land of bleeps and bloops, except the crash of a drum beat or melodies that f*ck up your day. The best music has nothing to do with numbers or power or esteem. It is fundamentally about whether or not something sounds good, moves your soul, is something you can feel in your bones.

From the rubble of a burst EDM bubble has emerged this new school of futuristic, vibey tunes that remind us how we came to love this music so dearly in the first place. That is the type of shit we runners of the trap and too future for this reality types really like. Proof exists that there is life post EDM, and that dance music is alive and well, thriving in these elusive, elite niche markets that, thanks to technology, are so accessible to anyone, anywhere. We who live in the internet are especially fortunate to be so widely exposed to the array of raw talent just awaiting discovery, available at the tips of your fingers as you sit somewhere searching the globe through a screen, hoping for some sound, searching for the sound that will blow your mind. A mind sick of the doldrum nonsense that characterizes so much of this worn out scene.

I am a victim of circumstance, sometimes guilty of providing slightly regurgitated content and following trends that draw in our readers. It isn’t very often I find myself writing about projects like this, but when I do it is because I really believe in them.

Mystery and intrigue were the first of many thoughts and feels that rushed through me as I listened to this EP from emerging future producers Kadington. Don’t Kick the Cat because we all love cats and pizza in this fyoocha business. The EP found a home with a label that seems akin to them in style, nu nu and watchlist worthy LA based label that lives up to their name. Spirited has put out some massive tunes like, “Be Honest,” the RnB flip from StéLouise, and a few others that have seen substantial numbers since the time of its inception. The label’s recent release is this killer EP from Kadington. NestHQ premiered the single, “Town Hustle,” giving it a well-deserved rave review. “Town Hustle,” is just one of four tunes. Tantalizing, moving future sounds that are past, present, and future cut with care and mixed with such precision that the music moves with ease. These guys are super low key, really only existing within the digital sounds they create. We know so little of them aside from an obvious love for cats, what with the title of this EP and also a cute blue cartoon cat for their logo; the little we know is no accident. Kadington’s obvious and respectable mission is to let the music speak for itself. One impressive tidbit is track two entitled, “The Rise and Fall,” has 110 layers. Kadington invites producers to ‘appreciate the intricacy of the mixdown’ on that one. Also very cool is the fact that they produced the score for a video game called Breakneck. Racking up futuristic cred before their Soundcloud even hits 500 followers.

Still wondering, who they are? You don’t necessarily need to know. Identity is seemingly meaningless in the future. As are all conventions, labels, and genre. When you find the right sound, the right way to express everything that there is through an entity that transmits feels and understanding on a level that transcends all five senses and time itself, and you are just there, in the moment with the music: everything else means nothing and all is right with the world.

Kadington: Mission Accomplished. We don’t know who you are, and we don’t care because we love you already. This EP speaks volumes in beautiful screams that have power enough to grasp hold of attention and restore waning faith in lovers of dance music. Faith that all will be right with the world as long as there is this music.
