Burning Man is reported to be “considering legal action” against Quiznos after the sandwich company posted a parody video to youtube poking fun at the festival while blatantly advertising their products as well as the upcoming Maze Runner movie (there’s an Oscar nominee). As most attendees would know, the festival promoters are less upset about the portrayal of burners (which is actually pretty funny) and more upset with the use of the festival to advertise corporate products. According to Burning Man spokesman Jim Graham:
We are pretty proactive about protecting our 10 principles, one of which is decommodification… We get a quite a number of requests each year from companies wanting to gift participants with their product or to capture imagery or video of their products at the event, and we turn them all down.
This is hardly the first time Burning Man has pursued a legal option in protecting their interests as these incidents seem to spike every year following the festival once video and images make their way back to “civilized” society. Though most companies are quick to take down the offending material, it appears Quiznos is in no hurry to comply with BM’s requests which means the company may end up facing a similar fate to that of Voyeur who lost their case in 2002.
Subway, Quiznos, you have one job: make footlong sandwiches. Don’t make parody videos, don’t enable pedophiles, don’t promote movies… just make ****ing sandwiches, okay?
