Chance The Rapper isn’t the most outspoken rapper, but when he does speak…well, this is what happens when he speaks.
We come to find out that Chance does what he wants, no matter the cost. He seems a little too existential for monetary reasons to guide him through life. If he would have taken a major record deal after dropping his oh so popular mixtape Acid Rap, he may have never gone on to make Surf the way he wanted. He has combined rap and live instrumentals, and created a music making atmosphere that is so unique that there is no mimic or mirror image of his style that means much of anything to anyone. He is the only one that matters, and he matters a lot to so many.
Me included.
In this interview, Chance talks about the creative control he had in the making of Surf, and how he veered off to join the Social Experiment to do so.
It shows on this album he just put out with the Social Experiment, and if you have listened to it, you know exactly to what I am referring. Chills run up my spine thinking of the massive pleasure I get listening to Acid Rap, and a breeze blows by with the thought of how deep Chance went to make this recent album. Not only that, but it is available for download, free of charge, on iTunes. I cry thinking about how much he cares about his fans, and what he does for them. Or what he does period.
He talks also about making music with the legendary soulful and brilliant songwriter Erykah Badu. It is worth mentioning as I sit here blown away by Chance the Rapper, that he claims his collaboration with her on “Rememory” was the best thing the singer ever did for him. Her brilliance exceeds words; she has some mystical, magical powers. Powers she obviously bequeathed on our young Chance. We should recognize that and thank her for that.
Let’s say that this article in Rolling Stone is really about Chance the Rapper coming into his own as an artist, and doing whatever the f*ck he wants, regardless of anything else. Here are some final words from RS and Chance.
