The announcement of Straight Outta Compton for me, and I assume many OG gangster rap fans, was above everything else bittersweet. N.W.A. has been long gone. Ice Cube makes movies and Dr. Dre makes billions and beats. I got over it. I revisited my love for this group that said mother f*ck the police, and pretty much put their very specific genre on the map.
The thing is, the rap game looks so different these days. So I have to wonder why they even decided to make the film in the first place, and then the question of what this biopic will look and feel like to this new audience. The assumption that the film and its message will speak to a variety of generations to which it will undoubtedly relate is the best case scenario, and that is the only one I can imagine.
Just as I’ve warmed to this idea, more news came. A reunion show for the surviving members alongside appearances from Schoolboy Q and Kendrick repping TDE at this reunion, and Snoop Dogg is also said to be slated to appear. Even though Dre isn’t officially confirmed, the announcement article all but guarantees his presence. The reunion show starring Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC Ren, will revisit N.W.A.’s iconic discography. It also lends the suggestion that fans might get some new music from the surviving members. After a 26 year hiatus, we are about to see these guys make history, again. Making history through repeating history, sounds glorious.
Chills run up and down my arms and legs every time I think of an N.W.A. reunion performance. I wanna cry, throw my hands to the sky pointing at Eazy-E. The film comes out in August, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for all that will come along with that release. For anyone who has lost faith in the rap game, time to get out your best prayer hands emojis.
N.W.A., nuff said.
