A$AP Rocky‘s tumultuous legal troubles in Sweden have only continued to get worse over the past two and a half weeks. Since his July 2nd arrest, Rocky has been ordered by a judge to indefinite detainment in a pre-trial detention center and has undergone inhumane conditions that border on human rights violations. With new stories about his overseas incarceration breaking headlines every day, there’s been an uproar of public support for the Harlem hip-hop artist. An overwhelming number of celebrities and fellow hip-hop artists have urged for Rocky’s release and A$AP Mob’s #JusticeForRocky petition has gathered over 600,000 signatures.
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West have now pulled some strings to make President Donald Trump aware of Rocky’s detainment. The power couple reportedly lobbied Trump on behalf of A$AP Rocky and urged the President to get involved with the rapper’s situation. If you recall, Kardashian worked with Trump last year to grant clemency to a great-grandmother convicted of drug trafficking as part of her justice reform pet project. On Friday, Trump confirmed that Kanye was the motivating factor in his decision to get involved with our country’s foreign relations. So apparently Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are calling the shots at The White House.
UPDATE: Trump has offered to personally vouch for A$AP Rocky’s bail and has assured the Swedish Prime Minister that the rapper is not a flight risk. Trump’s “very good call” will do little good though. A Swedish legal expert told CNN, “If you know the Swedish legal system you know that there is no bail system. Actually, the Swedish constitution prevents any minister, even the Prime Minister, getting involved, or even saying something about an individual case.”
Trump is not the first government official to get involved with A$AP Rocky’s arrest. Representatives Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), André Carson (D-Ind.) and Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.) demanded the release of Rocky and his crew during a press conference on Wednesday, July 17th. Congressman Espaillat has been spearheading the effort for weeks and sent his concerns regarding Rocky’s inhumane conditions in letters to the State Department, the Swedish ambassador to the United States and the U.S. Embassy in Sweden.
UPDATE: Justin Bieber has responded to Trump’s efforts regarding Rocky’s freedom. In his own tweet, Bieber called on Trump’s own imprisonment of thousands of immigrants and children under his controversial immigration policies.
