It’s very rare to see or hear a presence of the LGBTQ community within Dance Music. It’s even more surprising when you consider how much these cultures extract from one another. So when KANDY returned to headlines with his new single “Feelin’ KNT“, even bigger news came alongside the release. The New York native has come out as gay. To commemorate his courage, we decided to chat with the DJ/Producer to describe this monumental moment in his life.

What was the deciding factor that you made go ahead and reveal yourself to the world?
“It took me a long time to come into my own skin but after taking a year off from making music & having friends around me who supported everything I did, I learned that not everyone is going to accept me & that’s absolutely okay as long as I’m happy! Coming up in dance music I never had someone in the LGBTQ community to look up to & to let me know that it’s okay to be who you are & I want to be that person.”-KANDY
Now that you’ve come out, how much do you expect it to impact your life? There must be a sense of relief
“There is a huge sense of relief! All the stress of pretending to be someone else for 25 long years is now gone. I’m free to express myself & my creativity the way I’ve always wanted to! I just hope to inspire other people that were in the same position as I once was.”-KANDY
What has the support been like from your friends and family?
“The support has been nothing but positive! The hardest part for me was telling my family but once I told them they said they already knew! My mom said she’s known ever since I was younger because I always had to be princess peach whenever I played Super Mario!”-KANDY
I applaud you for being courageous, going forward, how do you plan on expressing yourself even more?
“I just want to keep pushing boundaries in dance music. This topic isn’t something that has been really brought to light & I think it’s important considering dance music’s roots derived from the LGBTQ community & there aren’t many queer artists standing up & letting others know it’s okay to be yourself!” -KANDY
Your new song, “Feelin, KNT”, what’s the meaning behind the title and vocal bits in the track?
“The sounds in the track derive from ballroom culture fused together with my original style of dance music. The vocals were originally from an interview with RuPaul back in 1988 but my best friend Lance Xavier re-created them for me!” –KANDY
What inspired you to make such a deep and club-oriented record? We’re used to hearing more highly energetic productions but this single is a much rowdier sound than usual
“I wanted to shoot for more of a warehouse vibe but still stick to my original roots. Even though this track is in the deep/club lane you can expect a lot more variety in my music in the future.” –KANDY
