KRANE’s stellar production and unique blend of music helped him quickly rise to fame. In the past year he’s dropped an amazing album, massive collabs with Ekali, Quix, and Myrne as well as numerous remixes that I’ve had on repeat. We’ve been trying to get this legend on for a Too Future mix for a hot minute and the timing finally worked out. The 30 minute mix features only music from KRANE including some unreleased gems I know RTT fans are going to drool over. We also had the chance to sit down and talk with him in our exclusive interview with KRANE that let’s you get a glimpse inside the mind of this musical genius.

 When you aren’t turning crowds into a sweaty mass of trap arms and headbangers, what are some of your favorite things to do in your downtime?  

I spend a lot of time thinking about food, looking at pictures of food and making food. I love cooking and baking. Since music has gone from just a hobby to a job, I find myself really often at the end of a work day planning dinner and cooking to unwind. I love hiking and taking my dog out too, and there’s some great spots really close to home in the Bay Area, so I try and hit the trails every week as well.

The world is in need of a superhero and you get to choose your superpower.  Are you picking something from Marvel or DC comics? 

Ha. Definitely Marvel. I grew up reading and watching a lot of x-men.. I think I had a subconscious affinity for the whole outcast, society-reject thing. I got bullied when I was a wee one, so I think that aspect of the franchise really resonated with me 🙂

What are three random facts that most people don’t know about you?
I used to make my own cereal flakes- like the ones you get in a box, but I’d make them at home.
I meditate regularly.
I was once a pre-school teacher.
If you had to pick one song to be your intro track for every time you walked into a room, what would it be and why?
Oh man.. that’s hard. The Jurassic Park theme song has been stuck in my head for about 8 years now, so probably that?


As a kid, what did you think you’d be when you grew up?  Was music always the end goal?
When I was a kid I remember telling my mom I wanted to be a therapist, to help crazy people. I’m not sure why. I think I always felt like I was good at talk to people about their issues. I never thought Id be doing music professionally- always for fun, sure- but never as a career. I mean, even as short as five years ago I didn’t even think this was an option. Needless to say I feel really fortunate to be able to do this.


The first time I ever saw you perform was back in 2016 at Emo’s in Austin.  You were the opener for Slander and NGHTMRE’s on their Gud Vibrations tour and I remember thinking that they messed up the lineup because you were so good and shouldn’t have opened.    Now it’s 2018 and you’ve dropped your first album to rave reviews and you’re on your first headlining tour, how does it feel to make the transition from opener to headliner?  Do you feel an added responsibility as the headliner?  
That’s really sweet of you to say. I was really fortunate to have the Slander and NGHTMRE boys take me on- really. I’d open for them tomorrow if they asked :). Def as the headliner there is added responsibility and pressure- first to put together a really strong set, but second to make it feel characteristically KRANE because I know some people are coming out just for my sound. Its an amazing feeling though, and the resonance and receptiveness of the crowds has been palpable. It feels very validating, and like I’m musically growing up a bit.

 

This is also the first year that you’ll be playing at Lightning In a Bottle and Electric Forest, are you nervous?  What do you have planned for your festival sets?  
Not nervous at all, just excited. Heard such good things about the festival and that people really give you permission to push the limits sonically, so that’s really exciting to feel liberated to play some things that might challenge audiences more. I haven’t planned anything yet- its early- but yeah, just to do something a bit weird, and special. But I used to get really nervous for shows- not anymore though and that’s freed me up I think to put better performances on.

 

When you released your album “Fallout” you talked about how you could not repeat it and needed to demolish part of yourself as a producer so you could reinvent yourself.   Does it hurt to leave that part of yourself behind or do you feel reborn with a clean slate to create?  
Its refreshing and scary. Refreshing because I feel like I’m producing all sorts of sounds at the moment, while starting to package them together into my next statement. A bit scary though because there’s that mystery when doing something slightly new, that doesn’t have a strong reference point I can look at and say “that was successful, so this must be too”. But that feeling doesn’t last because its so damn fun pushing my music to new places- I think people are gonna be surprised to hear the next EPs/LPs but already I know I’m behind the 100% and I think if I trust my intuition, I have nothing to worry about.


The last time we chatted, you talked about how you had already started another album and that its “radically different in style” but still very you. What kind of vibe or sonic space are you going for with your new work? How do you plan to continue to push the boundaries of your sound and what can listeners expect from you in the future?

I don’t like to try and describe music in great detail- I think it can take away from the listeners own interpretation, and inevitably fall short of really capturing something that can’t be described. That’s music. And so, all I’ll say is, its different. But its still me.


Saturday night was your last show with MYRNE.  What were some of your favorite moments of having him join you on tour?

MYRNE went very quickly, in my opinion, from a tour-mate/co-producer to a friend. Had a blast traveling with him. Def highlight was missing our connection from Seattle to Vancouver and hoping a three hour uber to Canada. He’s very road-trip worthy as a human.


During your b2b set, it seemed like both of you were feeding off of each other’s energy while you seamlessly worked the crowd into a frenzy.  Is that what it’s like for you in the studio when you work on collabs with other artists?
Its always a mix- but I think what came out on stage was a genuine friendship. Going b2b with MYRNE was just fun, we got to do our thing, and tell jokes, and throw some curve balls at people and I think that’s just our personality. It really depends- on stage or in the studio- on the individuals and theirs no bad or good- sometimes its more serious, more rigorous, more frivolous- But its all good when the product be it a set or a track is strong.


When you’re working on music or your next set, what are you striving to achieve?  What’s the ultimate goal that you want to reach with your audience?
Be fun, be emotional, be unique.

 

SLUMBERJACK & Alexander Lewis will be joining you for the rest of your tour which I think is only going to make your tour even more insane.  Will you be working on any more music with them during the tour?   
I hope so! The tour schedule is rigorous though and the flights, the hotels, catching sleep when we can- it can be so draining. But I intend to regardless.

 

How does it make you feel when the crowd starts chanting for one more song when you’ve already played over 20 min past your set?  
Ha ha. Its a trip! I feel bad people aren’t sick of me and ready to go home- I know that feeling when you just wanna keep having fun- but all good things come to an end 🙂 I feel really honored and thankful for getting to do this work. And I really mean it, and understand deeply, that without those people coming out and enjoying what I do, I would not do it. That’s something I take seriously and use to make sure I’m not wasting people’s time and giving them the best I can.

 

For your final track on Saturday, you played an unreleased track that you’ve been working on with Brasstracks.  It reminded me of that feeling you get when you’re about to embark on an epic adventure.  What can you tell us about it?  
I think that’s an awesome description to hear. We’ve had this song in the hopper for a bit now. It’ll find a home in the public some day, for now its special to be able to show people. I think an epic adventure is a great image to capture it’s mood.

 

Can you tell us about some of the other unreleased goodies that you dropped during your set on Saturday?
I’ve got another LP in the works, the SESSIONS collabs (if you’re not familiar with SESSIONS go checkout Soundcloud.com/kranesessions) and some remixes.. you’ll just have to keep an eye on my socials to see em. Everything starting to roll out soon.

 

Beyond music, what do you want for yourself in the next few years?

I want to be happy. I want to continue doing something I love for a career and practicing not being stressed by the little things. I want to make my friends and family and community happier because they know me. I want to look back to today in three years and say “well I couldn’t have predicted this!” Like I look back on my time three years ago. I want to eat lots of good food. Be a good dog-parent.  And of course I want to be thinking about music everyday.
