Over the past two years, we’ve watch as more and more artists combine live instrumentation with electronic production, with Big Gigantic, GRiZ, Sweater Beats, and Crywolf being just a few examples. NYC duo Brasstracks is yet another group to rise to the top by continuing to drive this crossover to the forefront of electronic music. The duo comprised of trumpeter and producer Ivan Jackson and drummer Conor Rayne have quickly rocketed to stardom, co-producing Chance The Rapper’s hit “No Problems”, collaborating with artists like Khalid, VanJess, and Jarraeu Vandal, and remixing artists like Gallant, Drake, and Kanye West. Their sophomore project follows last year’s debut Good Love EP, which featured Lido, Jay Prince, and Masego, and continues to expand their genre defying signature. Just mere months ago, the duo announced the two-part album and upcoming headlining national tour before heightening anticipation with singles “Brownstone” and “Those Who Know”, the latter of which showcased trumpeter Jackson on vocals. Out now, Brasstracks’ six track project For Those Who Know is a polished experiment combining electronic, soul, R&B and hip hop.
Brasstracks have always and continue to create songs that feel warm and retro, like jazz on vinyl. Their tracks are sultry and smooth, with soulful horns floating effervescently over future bass inspired production and flashy percussion. Though it feels like most artists are from or are based in LA, Brasstracks appear even more rare with their NYC centric project. It’s not just that the duo reps NYC; their music carries this hip, urban flare that is edgy and grimy yet shiny and crisp, like their hometown. FTWK goes even further to feature up and coming NYC talents S’natra, FatherDude, and The Underachievers in addition to London vocalist BXRBER. The first release of Brasstracks’ two-part project is an impressive offering that seamlessly blends modern sounds with an old school swagger and brings with it a wave of intrigue for the project’s upcoming accompaniment.
