DJ Mag’s “Top 100” list of DJ’s is one that is mired with controversy and is fairly often called out by many as either unfair or entirely unnecessary. Topping out at the world’s best DJ this year is Martin Garrix, followed by last year’s winners Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and 2014 winner Hardwell. As one goes down the list, a lot of the names in the top 50 are fairly recognizable, but it begs the question of how long has it been since some of these artists have been making waves in the music world, and also doesn’t account for the fact that some of these DJ’s have been caught playing prerecorded sets. Since originally coming out and being known as a reputable list, many pieces have shown the corruption behind DJ Mag and that it is kind of a sham. For example how in the world is Flume in 94th place with DJ Chetas in 33rd, it literally makes no sense.
An interesting take on this, however, was brought up by 3LAU who managed to give some semblance of authority back to DJ Mag’s list. His explanation was that people pay DJ Mag to maintain rankings in order to get better fees in Asia markets. Check out his entire explanation below:
How people interpret the list at this point is up to them, but in a time where artists are more reliant on money from tours, it’s a move I can understand. In my opinion, this list shows that despite being highly talented artists, these folks are forced to make investment choices that can make or break their careers. In a time where so many promoters and organizers are forcing artists to either pay to play or have them doing equally ridiculous promotional schemes, I can definitely understand that artists and their teams are looking out for their careers and future. At the very least I think we can all agree with 3LAU’s last point, that DJ’ing and producing are not meant to a popularity contest but an art form for us as people to come together over and enjoy. So lets push on and keep pushing dope music to the top.
