“It seems like blessings keep falling in my lap,” says Chance the Rapper, as the chorus for his new track, “Blessings.” A title maybe thought to be outdone, but it may be Big Sean and Drake who are outdone on this one. This time around it is praises going up and blessings coming down, and it is all love and nobody is competing. But Chance is killing it, quickly showing himself to hold a bright candle so f*cking lit. The rapper holds a blazing torch, lit for his hometown of Chicago and all of the musical history that made him and made his music, passed down to him quite directly in assistance on this forthcoming mixtape from Chi Town brethren Kanye West, and emblazoned in the flames of big wigs like Big Sean and Drake.
Blessings on blessings on blessings on blessings.
Prayer hands to the sky, for these blessings that just keep on coming. Way up, and maybe a little distracted by all the other music madness this past week, because the debut track from Chance’s forthcoming mixtape entitiled Chance 3, “Blessings,” premiered on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon this week. The rapper’s first solo project since Acid Rap, which legitimately changed the way people should be listening to rap music, drops May 13th. Also dropping that day will be jaws, panties, inhibitions, knowledge, and probably a variety of bombs.

Chance has been incorporating into his ever-evolving sound a live music element and gospel vibes that, with a little help from his friends and the music from his beautiful soul, have taken us to church. We are devout believers, and this song prayer is a way of life for Chance fans. His new track has an “Ultralight Beam” feel; TLOP fans will not complain even a little. On that track actually, the rapper tells us Kanye told him ‘let’s do a good ass job with Chance 3.’ A big finale on Fallon from gospel singer Byron Cage really drives home their parallels with their previous Kanye collaboration and is an early indication of Yeezy’s influence on/assistance with this mixtape. Help from friends old and new on this track, as Chance is joined also by “Sunday Candy” songstress Jamila Woods, and Donnie with his trumpet for when Chance sings and raps from his huge hard so hard that his breath becomes short. Help from friends like his have made it no chance that this rapper has been in receipt of all these blessings.
Way up, we are all so blessed. Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show audience were lucky enough it was heard for the first time. Jimmy can feel the electric energy from Chance and his many revved up fans, noting the internet would certainly go nuts over this. Chance performed “Blessings” live and Oh, laws! It will make you feel so alive, filled with soul and song prayer that is enough to bring audiences to their knees and fans to tears even, as they sit in awe of little Chano from Chi town, and the artist he has become and is still becoming. He brought in a Harlem youth choir and some other frills that are now just a part of the musical magical tings that are a part of this rapper/singer/wizard’s repertoire.
We are so ready for these blessings. We count them. We are thankful for them. It is all such love, but seriously, what a time to be alive. This year so far in music, and after the whackiest week of album releases, maybe one of this year’s greatest blessings is yet to come:
Chance 3, May 13th.
F*ck chance. Screw superstition. This Friday the 13th will be the luckiest day. We already know it will be filled with “Blessings.”
[Chance the Rapper vowed a while back that he would never charge for his music again. His last album Surf with Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment, was the first completely free release on iTunes. There is a very good chance, lol, this one will be free as well.)
