Welcome to another edition of sh*t famous DJs say about each other. At least this news comes from your favorite dance music blog out there. We know how to run more than just the trap, and bird is the word today. Actually, they are Skrillex and Deadmau5. Go figure.
The relationship between Skrillex and Deadmau5 started years ago, when Sonny ran into Joel at a HARD event, handed him a USB of ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,’ and the rest…well you know what happened next. It wasn’t until recently that we have been shown a strain in their working relationship and mutual respect for each other. TBH, it is hard for anyone to keep up with the erratic and scornful, larger than life personality of the one and only Joel Zimmerman. Last year, Skrillex in true Sonny Moore form told Howard Stern and inadvertently the world that ‘he never felt the need to be competitive with him.’
This much is true, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have an opinion about the actions of one dead mouse. He had this to say in his most recent interview for New York’s AMP 92.3:
“I’ll always have love for Joel because he put me on at an early time, but he’s an asshole. And everyone knows that, and he knows that. And that’s kinda his thing. I mean, the one thing that is unfortunate about it is that he has a record label. And when you have a record label, you gotta be a leader. And he has people that are like signed to him. And I couldn’t imagine being a leader, you know, going out in the public image being such a negative attitude…I don’t take it personally because I’m secure with myself and what I do, I love what I do. But I almost feel bad that that’s his one way of getting attention rather than going into music and curating. I think his attitude’s changed over the last couple years. I personally have become less connected to his music because his personality is almost overshadowing that, when he is such an incredible artist.
Skrillex is 100% honest if nothing else, and he is not malicious or unkind. He was probably not trying to create beef with his works; that’s just not Sonny’s style. He had some very positive words, and also some very harsh and honest things to say about the internet’s best friend and along with Drake and the Beibs, who Skrillex was also quoted as saying is ‘one of the most gifted and talented kids he has ever seen,’ with regard to recreational sports and abilities other then singing, dancing, and causing internet mayhem.
Just maybe, Deadmau5 should heed some warning from the superstar known as Skrillex, at the very least listen to what he is saying.
Maybe, just maybe, everyone would benefit from more showcasing of talent and less attempts at twitter relevance.
UPDATE: As expected, Deadmau5 has taken to the twitterverse to over respond to Skrillex’s remarks, his behavior being somewhat irrational and characteristically over-the-top. You can judge for yourself with that link, which will take you to all of the embedded tweets posted by Deadmau5 in response to this supposed blow thrown at him by Sonny. This is all too typical behavior, in my humble opinion. This entire ordeal is all too public and newsworthy. Conversations better held in public and how about we all get back to the music and stop caring so much about all of these beefs and publicity stunts? This is not the type of fire I am looking for in my life.
But hey, we are just as hung up on clickbait as the rest of the world.
…and so it goes.
Here is a video from the Daily Beat of Sonny salsa dancing, seemingly from the same interview where from came all of this sunny introspection.
