The biggest retailer in China, Alibaba, recently announced through their own news outlet Alizila that the company will be starting it own music company claiming it will be “a crucial pillar of Alibaba Group’s digital entertainment strategy” and “help forward [their] vision of becoming central to the everyday lives of [their] customers.”
The company plans to consolidate its two widely popular streaming apps, Xiami and Tiantian and has named popular musician and internet personality Gao Xiaosong to serve as chairman and Chinese music exec. Song Ke as CEO. This is big news for American musicians because China offers an absolutely massive market which will now be more connected than ever. They’ve already signed deals with Chinese labels Rock Records and HIM Records as well as a distribution deal with Sony-based BMG which holds the rights to Shakira, Britanny Spears, and Justin Timberlake among others.
Admittedly, the only thing I’ve ever been able to get from Alibaba.com is a crushing pile of spam and automated responses in broken English but I assume it works better when you live in China and speak Cantonese.
