Anyone who is anyone that tours the AUS is invited to record a triple J Mix with Nina Las Vegas. These mixes are historic for kicking some serious ass. Madeon, Porter Robinson, and RL Grime’s triple J’s are just some of my favorite sessions with the adorably voiced and accented NLV. CRNKN is a recent addition to this list, and even without pressing play, you know this mix is going to go the F in. CRNKN has a skill for mixing and selecting music that is perfectly catered to whatever audience will be listening to and dancing to his music. Ultimately, that is one of the most necessary skills for a talented DJ, and CRNKN is able to read the crowd in a live element or, in this instance, cater his mix to the ears of listeners at home.
Music to mine, as the old adage goes. Sweet, sweet music as guess who cranks out an unreleased track for us as the first song to find its way to our ears. We are promised a diverse selection of new songs, some of them rap, and some other stuff he hasn’t gotten to DJ yet. Upon first glance of the track list, I spotted at least three unreleased tracks, a whole lot of good rap music, some Sam Gallaitry (always a slam dunk), and my new favorite remix of one of my favorite A$AP Rocky songs.
I see you, CRNKN. Living in the too future with us at RTT. Just as his sets and mixes changes to cater to different audiences, his music stylings and the sounds he produces or remixes or uses in a mix can change depending on a number of things. CRNKN can go from hip hop to French house to trap to house to gangster rap, and so on, circling back around whenever the feels are right for whatever the moment is that we are experiencing. He doesn’t seem to let trends affect the decision making. He started out making trap music, and has moved so far beyond that now. His ability to grow and change makes him a commodity; it makes him a truly original artist. It also seems to be where the very eclectic sounds come from on this mix. He has no one style or sound.
He seems to have a lot of natural intuition, maybe a keen ear for choosing the music that goes into these mixes, or even a live set. It seems those choices are so diverse and oxymoronic. This triple J mix is both dark and ambient. It is trap beats and dubbed down singing matched with high, intense vocals. It shows off CRNKN’s very layered sound, giving listeners insight into what he is working on or listening to; it is a glimpse into the inner workings of this artist’s brilliant and complex mind.
I knew this mix would be a nothing but net, and here I stand on the line with my arms up and hands forward as I just threw the basketball. I am yelling swish, and I am not talking about actual basketball. It is a metaphor. In other words, this mix will go into my permanent vacation, and 100% will get me ready for CRNKN’s set in Philadelphia this weekend.
See you there! If not, listen and pretend you are there.
