If you’ve been paying attention, you no doubt took notice of Styles & Complete‘s latest collaboration with Texas rapper Crichy Crich and a little known producer named Exssv. Though the name may be unfamiliar now, I guarantee you’ll be seeing more of it– especially after he performs alongside Boregore this week for Miami Music Week. He just put out a phenomenal mix to get everyone pumped up for MMW and we managed to catch up and get some background before he heads off for the week:
RTT: How did you get involved in music?
My pops is an OG DJ and producer who had a record label called One Records out of New York. Disco and house stuff— Eddie Colon— he worked with Roger Sanchez, Stonebridge and Dubfire and mad different house dudes. There were always Technics in my crib and on weekends my dad would just go in for two hours at a time— eventually I picked up some hip hop records and [started scratching]. When I was 14, he took me out to South Beach Miami for Winter Music Conference and that changed my life. All the stories my dad had told me about the music industry just came to life.
RTT: What inspired you to link up with Styles & Complete and Crichy Crich for Starstruck?
I met S&C during my first SXSW in 2012 while playing a show at the Virgin Mobile House. Fast forward 2 years later. I get hit up to start working on music with Crich. He eventually sends over the vocals to Starstruck where I then I hit up S&C to make finally make this our first collab. I started it up over in my Studio in NYC, 2 weeks later I fly out to LA and met up with S&C and Crich in the studio, and boom! 600K Plays on soundcloud in less than two weeks, #4 record on the beatport Hip Hop 100 Chart, and massive support from tons a lot of A-list DJ’s including the head honcho Borgore himself!
RTT: Tell us about your production set-up:
I’m one of the only people I know who uses Logic, I feel like we’re a dying breed. I love Massive and Sylenth— I almost exclusively use Sylenth. I also like Effectrix… it gives anything a new spin.
RTT: No Hardware?
I mix completely in the box. The quality of plug-ins available now allows me to craft a mix that, as far as I’m concerned, totally competes with hardware based mixes. I especially love the Brainworx, iZotope and Steven Slate stuff.
RTT: Do you have anything big planed this spring?”
Aw Man, soooo much! This Sunday, March 29th I’m spinning the Buygore Pool Party at the National Hotel in Miami along with my dogs Borgore, Jauz, Dirty Audio, Ghastly, Crichy Crich and so many more amazing DJs (including – I just found out – Cedric Gervais). Also, working on another huge single with S&C featuring K–Stylis from Diplo’s 6th Gear, a collab with my big bro Party Favor, and about a billion new songs with Crichy! [laughs]
We just finished shooting a really funny video for Starstruck, which I’m super-excited about, and although I don’t want to give too much away, you can expect some cameos from Borgore & Dj Paul (Three Six Mafia). I’m definitely looking forward to doing more with Buygore. Those guys have been amazing to work with and super supportive of my work. Apart from all that, just tons of dope shows and some upcoming radio mixes!
There it is! Be sure to catch Exssv this week at the Buygore Pool Party and be on the lookout for a fire video coming soon!
