Perceptions can be a bitch. Britney Spears will always be the crazy singer that shaved her head, and Bill Clinton will always be the president that had an affair. For some of us, Jaden Smith may always just be “Will Smith’s son,” but we at RTT are beginning to see him as something else: a budding and talented rapper. By recently dropping a handful of substantive and impressive tracks, the intriguing and philosophical young star is steadily showing the world he’s got bars – and with no sign of slowing down. Most notably, his work on Childish Gambino’s Kauai mixtape demands respect; over the course of the past months Jaden has done nothing but impress us.
I’ll be the first to admit that he has always had a strange perception for me. He legitimately dressed up as Batman (wtf?) at Kim and Kanye’s wedding and continuously has some the most outlandish, thought-provoking tweets for a 16 year old, but it seems like things are finally starting to click, sonically.
Unawareness Is The Only Sin, And If You Were Aware You Would Know.

By taking advantage of his sister Willow’s SoundCloud, Jaden has put out multiple tracks and a video in the past months and plenty of people are starting to take notice. Each song is more thoughtful than the last and contain some of the deepest and most meaningful lyrics I’ve heard in some time. His most recent track, “Preach” features a real dope beat (produced by Teo) and Jaden rapping with his most aggressive demeanor yet. Whatever happens, at least he is writing his own rhymes (cough, Will Smith, cough). Peep his recent work below and you just might get hooked like me.
